These exclusive icons, which celebrate two of Nintendo’s classic platformers, are now available to claim on both the original Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 platforms. Both Super Mario Bros.

2 and Super Mario Advance have long been staples of Nintendo’s platforming legacy.

2, originally released in 1988 on the NES, introduced unique gameplay mechanics and character choices, while Super Mario Advance brought the adventure to the Game Boy Advance (GBA) in 2001, each title earning a distinct place in Nintendo’s celebrated history. According to Nintendo’s official announcement, the new icons can be unlocked through a “play to redeem” system.

To be eligible, users must start the respective games in their Nintendo Switch Online apps.

For those interested in Super Mario Advance icons, it’s important to note that the title is available on the GBA catalog, which is exclusive to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers.

The Expansion Pack tier gives players access to a broader library of classic titles, including GBA releases. Each game features a set of five unique icons, available for 10 Platinum Points apiece via the My Nintendo rewards program.

Platinum Points are earned through regular Nintendo activities, allowing dedicated fans to further personalize their online identity.

Both sets of icons will remain available to claim until April 6, 2026, after which Nintendo will rotate in new games and icon options as part of its ongoing Switch Online content refreshes. In a statement paraphrased from the official Nintendo update, the company underscored its commitment to rewarding player engagement: Members will need to launch Super Mario Bros.

This approach encourages members to revisit classic titles while enjoying new digital rewards. Nintendo Switch Online continues to expand its offering with classic titles, exclusive icons, and additional content for both standard and Expansion Pack users.

Since its introduction, the service has added several retro games and user rewards to keep the community engaged.
