The batch release delivers a modest set of changes for the original Switch while introducing a broader suite of features and usability improvements to Nintendo Switch 2, including variable refresh rate support in TV mode, new Mii Maker audio options, expanded data transfer capabilities, and several accessibility enhancements.
On Switch 2, Nintendo added support for VRR output in TV mode.
The company explained that when both the game software and the connected TV support VRR, the console will output video at a refresh rate that matches the game's rendering speed, producing smoother motion.
Nintendo also noted that enabling VRR requires an update to the Nintendo Switch 2 Dock firmware.
The Switch 2 update introduces several user-facing additions.
Mii Maker now plays background music with three selectable tracks, and Miis can be exported as QR codes for easy sharing between systems.
Nintendo clarified that players can generate and share a QR code of their Mii directly from the Mii menu.
The update also enables complete data transfer between two Nintendo Switch 2 consoles, allowing users to move save data, screenshots, and other system content to a new Switch 2.
GameChat received practical quality-of-life changes: the chat list now surfaces conversations a user has previously participated in, players can join a new chat without selecting friends first, and a screen-size toggle is available in the in-chat menu.
System settings were refined as well.
Nintendo added a VRR Settings option to Display, changed Dock Output Information to Video Output Information for clearer video-signal details, and made TV Sound settings save per connected display.
Accessibility gains include Portuguese (Brazil) support for text-to-speech and for voice-to-text conversion in game chat.
The update also adds a quick toggle for Handheld Mode Boost in Quick Settings, and makes it possible to use other controllers while Joy-Con 2 are attached.
Both Switch 2 and the original Switch received changes to the virtual game card flow.
If a virtual game card cannot be transferred because another console is offline, the system will present a temporary online license option that allows the purchaser to play the software until a transfer is possible.
Nintendo emphasized that only the account that bought the software may use this temporary online license.
Finally, Nintendo stated that the update fixes multiple issues and improves overall system stability.
Users should see version 23.0.0 available now via system settings on both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.
