Nintendo has achieved an unprecedented milestone in video game hardware sales with its newest console, Nintendo Switch 2.
According to an official report released by the company, the Nintendo Switch 2 sold more than 3.5 million units worldwide within the first four days following its global release on June 5.
This extraordinary performance cements it as the fastest-selling Nintendo system in history, outpacing all previous hardware launches from the Kyoto-based gaming giant.
The announcement was shared directly by Nintendo, highlighting both the system’s remarkable early sales and its robust feature set.
Redefining the hybrid console experience, the Nintendo Switch 2 is equipped with a larger, full 1080p high-definition display for handheld play, and the capability to deliver crisp 4K visuals when docked to a compatible TV or monitor.
It also sports a more powerful processor, which enables improved graphics and gameplay performance across supported games.
One of the standout enhancements is the redesigned magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers.
The new controllers offer innovative mouse functionality, making intricate in-game actions and navigation smoother for players.
Additionally, the Switch 2 debuts GameChat2, a new communication suite that allows players to initiate voice or video calls and share their game screens online, further bridging the gap between local and remote play.
Doug Bowser, President and COO of Nintendo of America, acknowledged the overwhelming reception from fans around the world.
"Players everywhere are embracing Nintendo Switch 2 as a versatile upgrade for both home and portable gaming," he stated, expressing gratitude for the community’s excitement and highlighting the system’s new features that encourage social gaming and shared experiences.
The Nintendo Switch 2’s launch was bolstered by the release of Mario Kart World, a major new installment in the iconic franchise.
The title breaks new ground by featuring a seamlessly interconnected world where players can drive across diverse environments—including cities, deserts, and oceans—and interact with ever-changing weather systems.
The game supports up to 24 players simultaneously, marking the largest multiplayer capacity in series history.
Looking ahead, Nintendo continues to capitalize on this strong momentum with the upcoming release of Donkey Kong Bananza, an all-new 3D platformer that will debut exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2.
Scheduled to launch on July 17, the game promises an action-packed adventure, allowing players to experience new worlds through Donkey Kong’s signature mayhem-driven gameplay.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is now available at a recommended retail price of $449.99.
Consumers can also opt for a bundle that includes a digital copy of Mario Kart World for $499.99.
Both configurations can be found via major retailers and the Nintendo eShop.
Initial regional sales reports from markets such as France, the UK, and Spain corroborate the global success reported by Nintendo, indicating strong demand and enthusiasm for the company’s next-generation system.
As Nintendo Switch 2 continues its rapid ascent, the company is set to maintain its leadership position in the gaming hardware market throughout 2024 and beyond.
