Final Fantasy 7 Remake Nintendo Switch 2: Hamaguchi Confirms Strong Sales and Return to Nintendo Hardware

Square Enix's Final Fantasy 7 Remake series has returned to Nintendo hardware with dedicated versions for Nintendo Switch 2, and director Naoki Hamaguchi says the move has paid off.

The Final Fantasy franchise—originally a pillar of Nintendo consoles on the NES and SNES before moving to PlayStation with the original Final Fantasy 7—has seen Square Enix steadily bring the core series back to Nintendo platforms during the Switch era.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, the concluding chapter of the remake trilogy, is scheduled to arrive on Nintendo Switch 2 on April 8, 2027.

Hamaguchi told Nintendo Everything that he feels a personal, emotional connection to Nintendo hardware and described the Switch 2 releases as a kind of homecoming for the numbered Final Fantasy series.

He said the move feels fitting given the franchise's early history on Nintendo systems and expressed interest in seeing Nintendo fans who skipped the series when it left the platform reconnect through the Switch 2 versions of Remake and Rebirth.

According to Hamaguchi, the decision to bring the Remake trilogy to Nintendo Switch 2 developed after Square Enix received an early presentation on the new hardware from Nintendo.

That technical preview prompted internal consideration of the platform's capabilities and feasibility.

At the same time, a leadership change at Square Enix—from Mr. Matsuda to Mr. Kiryu—shifted corporate policy toward a broader multiplatform approach.

Hamaguchi said the alignment of his own recommendation and the new CEO's multiplatform direction made pursuing Switch 2 ports a straightforward choice.

Hamaguchi characterized the outcome positively: the Switch 2 versions “turned out very well” and the series has performed strongly on the platform.

He noted that the Revelation reveal at Summer Game Fest generated a very positive response and materially boosted sales of the first two Remake entries, contributing to Square Enix's financial results.

He also highlighted the notable reaction from the Chinese gaming community following the announcements.

Hamaguchi additionally addressed development technology, confirming the project remains on Unreal Engine 4 rather than moving to Unreal Engine 5.

He provided context for that choice during interviews, emphasizing development continuity for the Remake trilogy.

The Switch 2 releases underscore Square Enix's renewed focus on multiplatform availability and mark a high-profile return of a flagship franchise to Nintendo hardware.

With Revelation's April 8, 2027 release date set, the Remake series' performance on Nintendo Switch 2 will be an important data point for both Square Enix's strategy and Nintendo's evolving platform ecosystem.
