Nintendo has officially addressed the reasoning behind its upcoming game’s title, Mario Kart World, diverging from the expected 'Mario Kart 9' moniker.
This information comes directly from a new interview with series producer Kosuke Yabuki, shedding light on the fresh direction the franchise is taking for its next installment on the Nintendo Switch.
Background and Context
The Mario Kart franchise has been a staple of Nintendo’s gaming portfolio since its debut on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992.
With Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe achieving combined global sales of over 60 million units, anticipation around the next main series entry has remained high.
The mobile title, Mario Kart Tour, launched in 2019, expanding the series' reach further and prompting speculation regarding the numerical sequence of the next console release.
Clarity on the Mario Kart World Title
In the newly published interview, Yabuki explained why this latest installment is titled Mario Kart World rather than Mario Kart 9.
He stated, "If our intention was simply to add more courses, the game would probably be called Mario Kart 9.
Our goal this time is to elevate the series beyond what’s come before, so we opted for a completely new title—Mario Kart World.
From the early stages of development, we used 'Mario Kart World' in the concept art."
Innovating the Mario Kart Experience
Yabuki further discussed the inspiration behind the global concept.
He elaborated that traditional Mario Kart games involved players progressing from one discrete course to another.
Leveraging advancements in modern technology, the team envisioned an interconnected, seamless world where players transition fluidly between tracks—creating a single, expansive racing environment.
"The idea was to realize a unified world for Mario Kart, which has never been possible with previous technology.
That drove us to design a new kind of Mario Kart experience," Yabuki said, candidly adding that undertaking this vision introduced its own unique development challenges.
Development Timeline and Achievements
Development for Mario Kart World began in 2017, following the release of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Nintendo Switch.
Nintendo’s development teams are renowned for their attention to quality and innovation, and this new title continues that tradition.
Nintendo has not yet announced an official release date, but the anticipation among fans and the gaming industry remains considerable.
With Mario Kart World, Nintendo aims to redefine how players engage with its beloved kart racing universe.
Fans can look forward to further details in future Nintendo Direct presentations and updates via the eShop as the launch approaches.
