Nintendo is setting high expectations for the debut of the Nintendo Switch 2 by making Mario Kart World its main launch title, reinforcing the racing franchise’s pivotal role in the company’s software strategy.
As the successor to the Nintendo Switch—a system that has redefined the hybrid console market—Switch 2 represents a significant step for Nintendo, with Mario Kart World positioned at the front of its upcoming lineup.
In a recent interview with Inverse, Nate Bihldorff, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President, addressed the company’s rationale behind prioritizing Mario Kart World ahead of other highly anticipated franchises.
Bihldorff noted that Mario Kart is “one of the most broadly accessible games imaginable,” citing the franchise’s ability to appeal to both new and veteran gamers.
He emphasized that while the game offers an easy entry point for players of all ages, it also provides enough complexity and depth for competitive play.
"The ongoing success of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Switch underscores a widespread enthusiasm for racing games," said Bihldorff.
"But beyond its sales, Mario Kart remains a title designed to engage long-time Nintendo fans and attract newcomers alike, making it an ideal match for a new hardware launch like the Switch 2."
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continues to cement its legacy as the Nintendo Switch’s top-selling title, having surpassed 68 million units in sales as of March 2025.
This remarkable milestone speaks not only to the enduring popularity of the Mario Kart series but also to its significance within Nintendo’s broader platform strategy.
Further shedding light on Nintendo’s launch approach, Bill Trinen, another key Nintendo of America executive, remarked on the intention behind curating marquee experiences for Switch 2’s launch window.
Trinen explained that Nintendo aims for titles like Mario Kart World and the upcoming Donkey Kong game to serve as "genre- and franchise-defining moments that harness the platform’s unique hardware capabilities."
However, the announcement that Mario Kart World would retail at $80 on the Switch 2 has spurred ongoing debate amongst fans and analysts.
Despite the discussion surrounding its price point, the focus remains squarely on the game’s ability to showcase the next generation of Nintendo hardware and unite a diverse global player base.
With its historical context, strong sales foundation, and continued innovation, Mario Kart World’s debut on the Nintendo Switch 2 marks a strategic and symbolic moment for Nintendo, highlighting the company’s commitment to broad accessibility and quality first-party titles.
