System Shock Remake Coming to Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 in 2025: Nightdive Studios Announces Enhanced Port
Nightdive Studios, renowned for their work revitalizing classic games, has officially announced that the critically acclaimed 2023 System Shock remake will launch on both Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Switch 2 consoles in 2025.
Revealed during this year's Indie Horror Showcase, this news gives Nintendo fans the chance to experience one of the most influential first-person RPG shooters in gaming history, fully optimized for both hardware platforms.
Originally released for PC in 2023, System Shock’s remake drew praise for faithfully preserving the essence of the 1994 original while introducing overhauled controls, modernized interfaces, and a completely re-recorded audio score.
After a successful launch on PC and a subsequent console release, Nightdive Studios is now expanding the game's reach, cementing its legacy with the upcoming Switch and Switch 2 versions.
The Switch 2 edition, in particular, will deliver several notable enhancements.
Nightdive Studios confirmed that it will support mouse controls—a nod to the game's PC roots—alongside 1080p resolution and 60 frames-per-second performance right out of the box.
Both Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 versions are set to feature full gyro aiming support, providing a tailored and immersive experience for fans on either device.
Importantly, the complete System Shock remake will ship on a single cartridge, ensuring accessible and uninterrupted gameplay for physical collectors and digital fans alike via the Nintendo eShop.
Nightdive Studios' lead developer stated, in effect, that the team intentionally focused on preserving the atmosphere and core experience of the 1994 original, while making deliberate improvements to the gameplay interface and underlying systems.
These updates aim to enhance the experience for modern audiences without sacrificing what made the classic so captivating: the chilling presence of the AI antagonist SHODAN, considered by many to be one of gaming’s most iconic villains.
Critical reception for System Shock has been largely positive since its initial PC release, with many outlets praising Nightdive Studios' dedication to authenticity, though some reviewers have noted that certain aspects might feel dated to newcomers.
Nevertheless, the enduring appeal of System Shock, combined with its fresh controls and performance options, is likely to attract both series veterans and new players when it arrives on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 in 2025.
With this launch, Nightdive Studios continues to set industry standards in game preservation and modernization, underscoring the timelessness of System Shock’s cyberpunk horror legacy.
Stay tuned to the Nintendo eShop and the official Nightdive Studios channels for further updates as the release draws near.
