Hazelight Studios and publisher Electronic Arts released the first trailer announcing It Takes Two for Nintendo’s next-generation hardware, confirming a free upgrade path for owners of the original Nintendo Switch edition.

It Takes Two, the cooperative-only platform-adventure directed by Josef Fares, originally launched on March 26, 2021, and is known for its Friend’s Pass system that lets one player invite a friend to join for free.

In the trailer and accompanying developer notes, Hazelight stated that Nintendo Switch players who own It Takes Two on the original Switch will be able to upgrade to the Nintendo Switch 2 edition at no additional cost via an update.

The studio clarified that this upgrade process will be delivered through a software update distributed to qualifying copies on Nintendo’s platform.

Hazelight and EA also confirmed cross-platform multiplayer support.

The developers announced online cross-play between Nintendo Switch 2, PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

For players on the original Nintendo Switch, Hazelight explained two compatibility paths: local co-op between a Switch and Switch 2 user via GameShare, and online play with a Switch 2 user if the Switch 2 player runs the downgraded original Switch edition.

It Takes Two’s core design — a purely co-op experience built around two distinct but interlocking character abilities — remains central to the Switch 2 announcement.

Hazelight reiterated that Friend’s Pass will continue to allow a friend to join for free, enabling split-screen or online co-op without requiring both players to purchase the game separately.

The move brings Hazelight’s acclaimed cooperative design to Nintendo’s new hardware and aligns with EA’s broader support for platform parity across current consoles and PC.

Developers and publishers increasingly prioritize cross-play and upgrade paths to smooth transitions between console generations, and Hazelight’s announcement follows that trend.

Players looking for the new Switch 2 build should monitor official Nintendo channels, Hazelight’s social accounts, and the Nintendo eShop for the update and precise availability details.
