Digital Eclipse has officially detailed its ambitious post-launch roadmap for Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection, which arrived this week on both Nintendo Switch and the new Switch 2.
Designed to celebrate the origins of the iconic fighting series, Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection compiles the first four arcade games in one comprehensive package, marking the first time in years these classics are widely accessible on modern Nintendo hardware.
Building on the momentum of launch, Digital Eclipse confirmed upcoming free updates for the collection, with a spotlight on two headline additions: the Online Arcade feature and The Khronicle of the Realms.
These updates aim to both expand multiplayer functionality and deepen the series' lore for returning fans and newcomers alike.
The Online Arcade feature, described as more advanced than Quick Match and previous multiplayer attempts by Digital Eclipse, is currently in active development and planned for release via a post-launch update.
According to the developer, this mode will allow users to create public or private online rooms, select their favorite Mortal Kombat titles from the collection, and invite friends to join.
Each room can host up to sixteen players and support multiple instances of the same or different games simultaneously.
Players can organize matches in a traditional "winner stays" fashion, or choose to spectate ongoing bouts.
The feature’s robust lobby system is designed to give users the experience of operating a personal digital arcade, tailored to the titles and gameplay experiences they value most.
"This expansion to the online experience is our most ambitious to date," explained Digital Eclipse, citing the need for comprehensive internal and partner testing before it reaches the player base.
The company anticipates this update will roll out within weeks of the initial launch, though exact timing may vary based on platform approval.
Complementing the enhanced multiplayer suite, The Khronicle of the Realms will be introduced within The Krypt—Mortal Kombat's interactive gallery and hub.
This new addition provides an illustrated history that chronicles the events, characters, and epic battles depicted in the first four arcade games.
The feature is designed to give fans both a visually rich and informative overview of the series' foundational stories, tracing the conflicts between realms such as Outworld, Earthrealm, and Edenia.
Digital Eclipse reaffirmed that this update, too, will arrive free of charge in the weeks following launch.
The studio also noted the possibility of future content expansions for Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection, though the current focus remains on preserving and celebrating the arcade era of the franchise—an era many believe set the standard for competitive fighting games in the 1990s.
Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection is now available for digital download from the Nintendo eShop for both Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.
A physical release, featuring the full collection on cartridge—including for the Switch 2—is slated for the end of the year, allowing diehard fans and collectors to secure a tangible piece of Mortal Kombat history.
