Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection: Digital Eclipse Addresses Fan Hopes for Mortal Kombat Nitro on Nintendo Switch
Digital Eclipse, renowned for its dedication to video game preservation, made headlines in June with the announcement of Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection—a comprehensive package bringing together iconic entries from across the Mortal Kombat franchise.
The upcoming collection is set to launch digitally on October 30th for Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, followed by a physical release in December.
Since its reveal, Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection has generated considerable excitement within the gaming community, particularly among Nintendo Switch and retro gaming enthusiasts.
One persistent question is whether Digital Eclipse could include Mortal Kombat Nitro—a long-lost, unreleased follow-up to the Super Nintendo port of the original Mortal Kombat.
Developed in the mid-1990s by Sculptured Software, with support from Acclaim, Mortal Kombat Nitro was intended to address criticism of the sanitized SNES version by reintroducing missing content, expanding the roster with characters like Goro, Shang Tsung, Reptile, and Kung Lao, and adding new features.
However, the project was ultimately cancelled when Midway shifted focus to Mortal Kombat II, redirecting resources to its console adaptation instead.
Interest in Mortal Kombat Nitro has resurfaced in recent years, fueled by interviews and social media anecdotes from past developers.
Earlier this year, intrigue spiked when former Acclaim employee James Fink showcased his prototype ROM of the game in a detailed video with Mortal Kombat historian Tabmok99.
This prompted speculation about whether Digital Eclipse would reach out to Fink for collaboration or archival purposes in their interactive timeline.
When contacted directly, Fink clarified that, while open to working with Digital Eclipse, no discussions had taken place regarding Mortal Kombat Nitro's inclusion in the Legacy Kollection.
He stated there have been "no conversations so far" related to Mortal Kombat and noted that franchise co-creator Ed Boon may still possess a copy of the unreleased ROM.
Digital Eclipse, when asked about Mortal Kombat Nitro, declined to comment on the title, neither confirming its awareness nor providing any indication of the game being featured, even in a non-playable format.
Repeated attempts to contact Ed Boon for further clarification yielded no response.
While the absence of definitive news may disappoint some Mortal Kombat fans, Digital Eclipse's proven commitment to thorough and authentic game collections offers hope.
The studio recently pledged to include the rare WaveNet version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 in the upcoming release, further bolstering community trust.
Addressing general concerns about game availability, producer Stephen Frost emphasized online, "We strive to include every game possible in every collection we do.
We are fans, and that’s our number one goal.
Sometimes, factors like licensing, legal, or technical issues are simply out of our control."
As anticipation builds for the Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection across Nintendo Switch and multiple platforms, the gaming world remains watchful for any new developments regarding Mortal Kombat Nitro.
For now, fans can look forward to revisiting legendary Mortal Kombat titles and reliving arcade history when the collection drops this October, both digitally and—come December—in physical form.
