Retrace App Adds SN Operator Support for SNES Cartridge Authentication on iOS and Android

Epilogue’s Retrace app, which lets owners verify the authenticity and pricing of physical cartridges when used with the company’s hardware, has been updated to support the new SN Operator device and SNES cartridges.

Retrace v1.1.0 is available now on iOS and Android and brings faster identification, improved tablet layouts, new UX options, and anonymous diagnostic reporting.

Background

Retrace was previously used in conjunction with Epilogue’s GB Operator to identify and validate Game Boy cartridges.

With the 1.1.0 update, the app extends that same identification and authenticity workflow to SNES cartridges when paired with Epilogue’s SN Operator via USB-C.

Epilogue notes that SNES detection is currently labeled as beta while the company continues to expand and refine its cartridge database.

Key changes in Retrace v1.1.0

- SN Operator support: Plug the SN Operator into a device over USB-C and insert a SNES cartridge to run identification and authenticity checks previously available for Game Boy cartridges.

- Automatic detection: The app now begins identification automatically upon cartridge insertion; users no longer need to tap to start the process.

- Tablet layout scaling: UI layouts have been updated to properly scale on iPad and Android tablets so the app uses the full available screen rather than rendering at phone proportions.

- UX and labeling: New Settings page, haptic feedback, writable result labels, an "Inconsistent Read" label, and ROM size fallback have been added.

- Diagnostics and stability: Epilogue integrated anonymous diagnostics via Sentry to capture crashes and errors tied to a randomly generated, anonymous session ID.

The company states no personal data is collected.

Paraphrased developer notes

Epilogue explains that SN Operator integration allows users to “plug it in over USB-C, drop in a SNES cartridge, and receive the same identification, pricing and authenticity flow already available for Game Boy cartridges,” while adding that SNES detection remains in beta as the database grows with additional cartridge data.

The developer also highlighted that identification now runs automatically when a cartridge is inserted, simplifying the user flow.

Additionally, Epilogue said the app’s tablet interface issues were resolved so the Settings page, result panel, and cartridge details now make use of available screen space.
