Shigeru Miyamoto says appearances in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie directly shaped development decisions for new Nintendo projects, according to a recent interview with Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu.

The veteran Nintendo developer told Famitsu that the inclusion of characters in the film prompted internal conversations that ultimately led to new games, including Yoshi and the Mysterious Book and a fresh Star Fox entry.

The Super Mario Bros.

Movie, produced by Illumination in partnership with Nintendo and released in April 2023, grossed more than $1.3 billion worldwide and became the highest-grossing film based on a video game.

Miyamoto — long credited with creating Mario and other cornerstone Nintendo franchises — framed the relationship between Nintendo’s films and game development as collaborative and case-by-case.

In journalistic terms, Miyamoto explained that when Fox McCloud was included in the script for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Nintendo teams discussed the logical next step of producing a new Star Fox game to capitalize on that appearance.

He said the decision was not unilateral: lineup choices are debated among teams, and the movie’s creative choices helped shape game priorities.

Miyamoto also described how work on the first Mario movie and Princess Peach Showtime overlapped, leading to cross-medium considerations.

He noted that because Yoshi was slated to appear in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, teams moved to develop Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, aligning the character’s portrayal across game and film.

In his words, these moves often result from discussions rather than top-down edicts, and they reflect a desire to maintain close ties between Nintendo’s interactive and cinematic projects.

Nintendo has a long history of aligning its game releases, marketing, and broader IP efforts to support major platform and franchise moments on Nintendo Switch and other systems.

While Nintendo traditionally reveals games via channels such as Nintendo Direct and releases titles through the Nintendo eShop and physical retail, Miyamoto’s Famitsu comments provide a clear example of how film projects can influence internal game development priorities.

The Famitsu interview offers a firsthand look at how Nintendo’s creative teams coordinate across media.

Miyamoto concluded that Nintendo will continue to evaluate each case individually and seeks to preserve strong connections between games and other developments.
