Mojang has announced a platform-specific change to how Minecoins — the virtual currency used in Minecraft Marketplace — function on Nintendo hardware.

Effective October 27, 2026, the studio says Minecoins purchased on Nintendo platforms will be restricted for use only on Nintendo Switch and the incoming Switch 2.

The change coincides with Minecraft’s launch on Switch 2, which Mojang has scheduled for October 27, 2026, and also affects cross-platform spendability for Nintendo users.

What Mojang is changing

Under the new policy, Minecoins bought via Nintendo storefronts or retail cards intended for Nintendo use will be usable only on Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 devices.

Conversely, Minecoins purchased on non-Nintendo devices will no longer be valid for Marketplace purchases when using Minecraft on Nintendo hardware starting on that date.

Mojang has said that any Minecoins a player owns before October 27, 2026 will be migrated into a Legacy Wallet.

Those funds will remain usable across platforms and carry no expiry date, but Mojang clarified that the balance held in the Legacy Wallet will be consumed first when players make Marketplace purchases.

Rewritten statement from Mojang

Mojang advised players to check packaging for platform compatibility when buying retail Minecoin cards, noting that cards may no longer support Nintendo devices in some cases.

In plain terms, the studio urged consumers to verify the platforms listed on card packaging to ensure the purchase will work where they intend to play.

Practical impact for players and retailers

For Nintendo players, the immediate consequence is that future Minecoin purchases made on non-Nintendo platforms (PC, mobile, other consoles) will not be transferable to Switch or Switch 2 after October 27, 2026.

Existing balances will be preserved through the Legacy Wallet mechanism and remain cross-platform, but will be drawn down first.

Mojang also confirmed a digital upgrade path for current Nintendo Switch owners when Minecraft launches on Switch 2, allowing existing purchasers a route to move to the new console without repurchasing base content.

Context and next steps

These changes affect how Minecraft Marketplace commerce will operate across the Nintendo ecosystem, including the Nintendo eShop and retail Minecoin cards.

Developers, retailers and players with cross-platform wallets should review balances and card packaging ahead of the October 27, 2026 Switch 2 launch.

Mojang’s announcement is a verified update to in-game currency handling tied directly to the Switch 2 release schedule.
