Minecraft Switch 2 upgrade: what physical Nintendo Switch owners need to know
Minecraft, developed by Mojang, is now available on Nintendo's new hybrid hardware, the Switch 2.
Mojang has confirmed that owners of the digital Nintendo Switch edition will receive a free upgrade to the Switch 2 version.
For players who purchased a physical Nintendo Switch copy, Mojang and distribution partners have published a clear paid upgrade route to the digital Ultimate Collection for Switch 2.
How the discounted Ultimate Collection upgrade works
Players who launch their physical Nintendo Switch copy of Minecraft will receive an in-game message prompting them to upgrade.
That prompt offers the digital Ultimate Collection for Switch 2 at a discounted price.
The Ultimate Collection bundles the Switch 2 version of the base Minecraft game plus five add-ons.
According to official messaging, the promotional upgrade price is expected to be well below the Ultimate Collection's standard price and also under the standalone Nintendo Switch 2 version, which is listed at $29.99.
Eligibility window and timelines
Mojang has set a promotional window for eligible owners: the discounted upgrade offer is available now and runs through 21 January 2026.
Digital owners who already qualify for the free upgrade do not need to purchase the Ultimate Collection; the free upgrade applies to qualifying digital purchases of the original Nintendo Switch edition.
Visual upgrades and included content
The Switch 2 release includes the Vibrant Visuals graphics upgrade.
Mojang describes Vibrant Visuals as delivering enhanced lighting, deeper shadow effects and a range of other graphical refinements designed to take advantage of Switch 2 hardware.
All Switch 2 editions of Minecraft also include the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack and support the Vibrant Visuals enhancements.
What this means for players and the platform
This upgrade path reflects a common approach for cross-generation releases on Nintendo hardware: offer a free transition for digital owners while providing a discounted paid option for players with physical copies.
The inclusion of Vibrant Visuals and the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack positions the Switch 2 release as a visually refreshed version that leverages the hybrid console's improved capabilities.
For step-by-step upgrade instructions and exact pricing for the discounted Ultimate Collection, players should check the in-game prompt on their physical copy or consult the Nintendo eShop entry for Minecraft on Switch 2.
