Baldur’s Gate III Will Not Be Released on Nintendo Switch 2, Confirms Larian CEO

Baldur’s Gate III, developed by Larian Studios, has been one of the most celebrated RPGs in recent years, garnering critical acclaim upon its release in 2023 across PC and other major platforms.

The game's compelling narrative design, robust mechanics, and deep role-playing elements quickly propelled it to the top of industry awards lists, with fans and critics alike praising its extensive content and replay value.

As demand for the title skyrocketed, many Nintendo enthusiasts began to speculate about the possibility of Baldur’s Gate III making its way to Nintendo’s next-generation console, widely referred to as the Nintendo Switch 2. Speculation about potential Baldur’s Gate III release plans for Nintendo Switch 2 was fueled by the platform's popularity and the success of third-party RPGs on the Nintendo eShop.

However, Larian Studios recently put the rumors to rest.

During a public Ask Me Anything session on Reddit, Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke addressed a question regarding the RPG's availability on Nintendo's upcoming hardware.

"While we were certainly interested in bringing Baldur’s Gate III to Nintendo Switch 2, the decision was ultimately out of our hands," Vincke stated, clarifying the studio's position and ending fan speculation. Baldur’s Gate III, since its 2023 release, has not only achieved significant sales milestones but has also received numerous awards, cementing Larian Studios as a top-tier developer in the role-playing genre.

The game’s absence from the Nintendo Switch 2 launch lineup is significant, especially for fans who hoped to experience its sprawling fantasy universe and intricate storytelling on a portable device. The Nintendo Switch platform has experienced remarkable growth, with the eShop becoming a crucial distribution channel for both large-scale and indie titles.

The potential for Baldur’s Gate III to join that library was compelling, especially given the franchise’s legacy and Larian's proven expertise.

Nonetheless, Swen Vincke’s comments confirm that, as of now, there are no plans for a Baldur’s Gate III release on Nintendo’s upcoming hardware. As anticipation for the Nintendo Switch 2 continues to build, fans will have to look to other platforms to experience Baldur’s Gate III.

Larian Studios remains committed to supporting their critically acclaimed title across existing platforms, ensuring ongoing updates and community engagement.

Meanwhile, the Nintendo community will continue to look forward to new RPG experiences on the next generation of Nintendo hardware, even if Baldur’s Gate III will not be among them.
