Baldur’s Gate 3 Switch 2 Port: Larian Studios Clarifies Decision Amid Fan Hopes

Larian Studios, the award-winning developer behind Baldur’s Gate 3, has addressed ongoing speculation and hopes regarding a Nintendo Switch 2 port of their critically acclaimed RPG.

Following the game’s massive success on PC and current-generation consoles since its 2023 release, Nintendo fans have hotly anticipated an announcement that would bring the fantasy epic to Nintendo’s next hardware.

However, recent comments from Larian’s leadership—shared during a Reddit AMA centered around the studio’s new Divinity project—have cast uncertainty on such aspirations. During the AMA, Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke responded to a direct question about the possibility of Baldur's Gate 3 making its debut on the Nintendo Switch 2.

Vincke offered a clear, if disappointing, explanation: simply put, the decision was not within the studio’s control.

Paraphrased, Vincke stated that although the team would have appreciated the opportunity, the final say lay elsewhere.

This aligns with prior challenges faced by developers working with licensed properties, especially titles based on Dungeons & Dragons intellectual property owned by Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast. Baldur’s Gate 3, which collected multiple Game of the Year accolades since its 2023 launch, continues to thrive on the Steam platform and PlayStation 5, with digital storefronts like the PlayStation Store and Steam recording robust sales figures throughout 2023 and 2024.

Despite this, Larian Studios has never confirmed plans to port the title to the Nintendo Switch or its anticipated successor, the Switch 2.

The developer previously demonstrated strong support for Nintendo’s ecosystem, notably with the release of Divinity: Original Sin 2 on Nintendo Switch, which saw an upgraded version launch in December 2025. The recent AMA also provided more optimistic news for fans of Larian’s Divinity franchise.

In response to a question about upcoming projects, Larian technical director Bert expressed enthusiasm for Nintendo’s next hardware, stating the team "loves the platform" and will seriously evaluate the Nintendo Switch 2 as a target for their next Divinity title. Aside from game development, the AMA addressed the controversial subject of generative AI in game production.

Swen Vincke clarified Larian's policy moving forward, noting that while the team had previously explored generative AI for concept art and creative brainstorming, there are no plans to incorporate AI-generated art in the new Divinity project. While hopes remain high among the Nintendo community for Baldur’s Gate 3 or future Divinity titles to make their way to the Switch 2, Larian’s statements highlight both the opportunities and limitations of working within large licensed universes.

As the Nintendo Switch 2’s launch approaches, the ball may be in the court of licensing partners rather than the developers themselves to give the green light for fan-favorite games to join Nintendo’s ecosystem.
