Larian Studios Addresses Baldur’s Gate 3 and Divinity on Nintendo Switch 2

Larian Studios, the acclaimed Belgian developer behind hits like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin 2, has weighed in on the growing community interest regarding potential releases for Nintendo’s upcoming hardware, the Nintendo Switch 2.

Following the widespread critical and commercial success of Baldur’s Gate 3—which collected multiple Game of the Year awards in 2023—fans were eager to learn whether the epic RPG or its new Divinity installment might find their way to Nintendo’s highly-anticipated next-generation console. During a recent Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA) session, Larian’s director Swen Vincke addressed the fate of Baldur’s Gate 3 on Nintendo Switch 2.

Vincke expressed that the team at Larian "would have loved" to see a Switch 2 port happen.

However, he clarified, "that decision was out of our hands," signaling that the possibility of Baldur’s Gate 3 coming to the platform is not within the studio’s control.

While Vincke did not expand further, his comments strongly suggest that external factors—rather than technical limitations—underlie the absence of a Switch 2 version. Further context emerged from industry chatter, with longtime gaming insider Nate the Hate claiming on social media that Larian’s current partnership with license holders Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast has been strained.

Though not officially confirmed by any parties involved, this relationship dynamic could be a significant factor impacting platform availability for Baldur’s Gate 3. On a more optimistic note, the outlook for Larian’s next Divinity game on Nintendo’s future hardware is brighter.

The studio recently unveiled its new Divinity project, continuing a storied franchise that has consistently earned both critical praise and player loyalty.

Addressing fans during the same AMA, Larian’s technical director Bert van Semmertier shared that the development team "loves Nintendo’s new console" and assured the community that the Switch 2 is being "seriously considered for the next Divinity game." Divinity: Original Sin 2 previously launched on the Nintendo Switch in 2019, where it was lauded for its robust performance and seamless cross-save features with PC.

In a testament to the franchise’s enduring appeal, a new Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of the game debuted in May 2024, bringing refined visuals and enhanced gameplay options for users of the upgraded hardware. While Larian Studios has set clear expectations about the unlikelihood of Baldur’s Gate 3 appearing on Nintendo Switch 2, fans of the Divinity series can look forward to possible future releases on the platform.

As always, further announcements from Larian Studios and Nintendo are awaited, especially with the Switch 2 poised to expand its catalog of high-profile RPGs.
