During the latest Nintendo Direct event, Nintendo delivered a major surprise for fans of the classic GameCube era.
In addition to unveiling the long-anticipated addition of GameCube titles to the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service, Nintendo revealed 'Kirby Air Riders,' a full-fledged sequel to the beloved 2003 racer, Kirby Air Ride.
The new title is slated for release on Nintendo Switch in 2025, making it the first original Kirby racing entry in over two decades and reigniting excitement within the franchise’s dedicated fanbase.
The announcement video offered a nostalgic look at the Air Ride machines and the unmistakable whimsy of the Kirby universe.
However, perhaps the most noteworthy revelation was the return of Masahiro Sakurai as director.
Sakurai, legendary creator of both the Kirby and Super Smash Bros.
franchises, has not helmed a Kirby title since his work on the original Kirby Air Ride.
His involvement in Kirby Air Riders marks a significant comeback for both the developer and the series.
"Bringing back both the core gameplay and vibrant spirit of Kirby's unique racing adventure, directed by Sakurai himself, signifies a dual homecoming that fans have long hoped for," stated Nintendo during the presentation.
The company stopped short of showcasing live gameplay footage, instead choosing to highlight concept visuals and the art design that reflect the series’ signature charm.
Kirby Air Ride originally launched on the Nintendo GameCube in 2003 and quickly developed a cult following for its accessible controls, fast-paced multiplayer modes, and innovative City Trial mode.
Its continued popularity was further cemented with its recurring presence in other Nintendo titles and fan demand for a sequel.
The resurgence of GameCube titles on Switch Online amplifies the nostalgia and sets an ideal stage for Kirby Air Riders to reintroduce the franchise to a new generation of players.
Set for a global release in 2025 on Nintendo Switch, Kirby Air Riders is expected to blend classic gameplay elements with fresh features, capitalizing on both the hardware capabilities of the Nintendo Switch and the eShop’s worldwide accessibility.
As with all first-party Nintendo Switch titles, the game will be available both digitally and at retail.
The announcement underscores Nintendo’s commitment to reviving celebrated GameCube experiences for current hardware, as well as its ongoing collaboration with iconic developers like Sakurai.
Further details, including new gameplay mechanics and multiplayer features, are promised for future updates as the release date approaches.
Kirby Air Riders represents not just the return of a fan-favorite franchise, but also a significant moment in Nintendo’s 2025 lineup, promising to deliver the joyous gameplay and creative direction that have become hallmarks of both the Kirby series and Masahiro Sakurai’s work.
