Golden Week has come to a close in Japan, ushering in the release of the latest physical game sales charts as reported by Famitsu and disseminated by Gematsu.
During the sales tracking period from April 21st to May 4th, 2024, Too Kyo Studio’s strategy RPG and visual novel hybrid, The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy, secured the top spot by selling 26,732 physical copies.
This Nintendo Switch exclusive not only made an impressive debut but also managed to outperform the much-discussed western title, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which landed in fourth place despite being absent from the Switch platform.
Although The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy led the charts, overall sales numbers across major titles remained modest.
Super Mario Party Jamboree, another notable Nintendo Switch release, moved 15,014 units during this period, which is over 11,000 fewer copies than The Hundred Line.
Jamboree’s continued performance marks 1,271,145 total units sold, but its current weekly figures align with gradual slowing as anticipation rises for the next major hardware release from Nintendo.
Other Nintendo Switch releases during this period included Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club: TOKIMEKI Roadmap, which recorded 8,266 units sold for its debut.
Arc System Works also introduced Super Technos World: River City & Technos Arcade Classics, attracting 6,672 buyers.
Meanwhile, Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition exited the top ten after a period of steady performance.
Nintendo Switch software continues to show resilience as the leading platform in Japan, dominating six of the top ten spots in the charts.
Minecraft for Switch maintained its strong presence, selling 12,775 copies to reach an impressive lifetime total of 3,862,466 in Japan.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continued its enduring success with another 9,623 copies added, while Animal Crossing: New Horizons recorded 7,930 units sold, pushing its already substantial tally higher.
PlayStation 5 saw several titles in the ranking as well.
Aside from Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 with 9,825 units moved, Monster Hunter Wilds achieved 9,050 sold copies, and Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves rounded out the chart with 6,320 units.
A spokesperson for Famitsu noted that overall numbers reflect a “quiet period” in the Japanese market, consistent with expectations as audiences anticipate potential announcements regarding Nintendo’s next generation hardware.
Despite the lower sales volume, Nintendo Switch exclusives and established franchises continue to anchor the Japanese gaming retail landscape.
