Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment Dominates Japanese Sales Charts, Switch 2 Leads Hardware Race

Nintendo continues its dominance in the Japanese gaming market as the latest physical sales figures from Famitsu reveal Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment leading the pack.

The highly anticipated sequel debuted at the top spot with an impressive 73,183 units sold on the Nintendo Switch 2 platform during its first week, making it the standout new release among a strong lineup of established titles. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is the newest entry in the successful Hyrule Warriors series, renowned for blending The Legend of Zelda universe with large-scale, strategic action gameplay.

Developed by Omega Force in collaboration with Nintendo, the title's successful launch reinforces the enduring appeal of action games within the Nintendo ecosystem and bolsters the momentum for the newly launched Nintendo Switch 2 hardware. Notably, returning titles also saw strong performances this week.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A climbed back into second place on the original Switch with 54,904 units sold and ranked fifth on the Switch 2 platform with an additional 29,662 copies.

Mario Kart World claimed third place thanks to 54,413 copies sold on Switch 2, contributing to a cumulative lifetime total surpassing two million units.

Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake remained a steady force across multiple platforms, taking fourth, sixth, and seventh place for the Switch, Switch 2, and PS5, respectively. Animal Crossing: New Horizons re-entered the top 10, buoyed by news of a special Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, demonstrating its persistent popularity.

Donkey Kong Bananza also posted consistent numbers, staying at eighth place for the week.

Meanwhile, Super Mario Party Jamboree for Switch 2 rounded out the top ten, highlighting fan appetite for party-driven gaming experiences on Nintendo's next-gen system. The hardware market continues to reflect Nintendo’s robust position.

The Switch 2 led the hardware charts with 90,410 units sold during the week, propelling its lifetime sales to 2,642,256 units.

The Switch OLED and Switch Lite models also contributed significantly, with 13,270 and 7,675 units sold, respectively.

In comparison, Sony's PlayStation 5 series totaled 7,691 units across all models, while Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and S lagged further behind, together tallying less than 500 sales. Cementing Nintendo's ongoing strength in both software and hardware, these results underscore the enduring demand for innovative games and systems in Japan’s competitive gaming landscape.
