Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined Dominates Japan’s Weekly Game Sales Charts Across Switch and PS5

Square Enix’s latest release, Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined, has made a resounding impact on Japan’s gaming charts, sweeping the top three spots in weekly physical sales according to newly published data from Famitsu.

The beloved RPG franchise, a cornerstone of Japanese gaming culture, continues its dominance as the reimagined edition achieved an impressive combined total of over 456,000 units sold across Nintendo Switch’s two hardware generations and the PlayStation 5 in just one week. Between February 2 and February 8, 2026, Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined moved 177,563 units on Nintendo Switch 1, 160,101 on Switch 2, and 118,798 on PS5.

These sales numbers not only reaffirm the franchise’s popularity in Japan but also edge out previous remake successes, such as Dragon Quest I & II HD Remake, which garnered a little over 410,000 copies sold in its debut week.

The close performance between Switch 1 and Switch 2 editions underscores the sustained interest in Nintendo’s platforms, even as Switch 2 begins to establish itself as the preferred console for Japanese gamers. Behind Square Enix’s blockbuster, Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja’s action RPG sequel, Nioh 3, debuted at fourth place on the charts with 40,570 units sold on PlayStation 5.

While Nioh 3 has been well-received by critics, its sales do not approach the extraordinary numbers achieved by Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined.

Rounding out the top contenders were enduring favorites such as Mario Kart World (10,875 units on Switch, totaling over 2.8 million lifetime sales) and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which continued its robust momentum on both Switch and Switch 2, pushing its cumulative sales to over 8.3 million units on the original Switch platform alone. Other notable titles in the week’s top ten include Momotaro Dentetsu 2: Anata no Machi mo Kitto Aru – Higashi Nihon Hen + Nishi Nihon Hen (Switch 2), Pokémon Legends: Z-A (Switch), and Kirby Air Riders (Switch 2).

Each of these games contributed to the continued dominance of Nintendo’s software ecosystem in the Japanese market. On the hardware side, sales trends remained largely consistent with prior weeks.

Switch 2 logged a commanding lead, selling 65,807 units and reaffirming its role as Japan's top-selling console.

Meanwhile, cumulative lifetime figures show Switch Lite at over 6.8 million units, and Switch OLED closing in on 9.5 million units, spotlighting the diversity and resilience of Nintendo’s hardware portfolio.

Sony’s PlayStation 5 family achieved total weekly sales of 11,130 units across all SKUs, while Xbox consoles remained a niche player with comparatively modest sales figures. These results emphasize that Japanese players continue to show strong loyalty to Nintendo platforms, with the Switch family’s ecosystem—bolstered by hit titles like Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined—keeping Nintendo at the forefront of the nation’s gaming industry.

As new titles and hardware revisions emerge, the robust performance of both software and hardware provides a clear signal of the enduring appeal of gaming in Japan.
