Nintendo continues to innovate classic game experiences, and the upcoming release of Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 for the Nintendo Switch 2 is a testament to this commitment.
Launching on October 2, 2024, this collection brings together two of Mario’s celebrated 3D adventures, reimagined for a new generation of players.
Developed by Nintendo, both games arrive with a host of enhancements optimized for the Nintendo Switch 2 hardware, including higher resolution visuals and upgraded control features.
A noteworthy feature introduced in this release is the Joy-Con 2 mouse mode, which leverages the updated Joy-Con controllers’ advanced sensors to allow for pointer-based gameplay.
This new functionality enables players to use a mouse-like pointer on the screen—a modern nod to the original Wii Remote motion controls that defined the Super Mario Galaxy gameplay experience.
However, it’s important for players eager to try this new mode to note a key limitation: the mouse mode is only accessible within the game’s two-player Co-Star Mode.
According to a recently published Nintendo Life review, the Co-Star Mode returns in these enhanced editions, letting a second player assist in collecting Star Bits or helping to defeat enemies.
Player Two can use their Joy-Con to control the onscreen cursor, and for those playing on a Nintendo Switch 2, the mouse mode enhances this interaction.
The review summarized that while most players may opt to enjoy the games solo, the inclusion of mouse functionality is a welcome extra for those seeking multiplayer cooperation.
"Co-Star Mode allows a friend to join and assist with in-game tasks, using either traditional Joy-Con controls or, on Switch 2, the new mouse mode, which is responsive and user-friendly," the review explained.
"However, this feature is accessible strictly when a second player is active, making it exclusive to Co-Star sessions."
Players hoping to experience mouse mode solo will need to recruit a second player, as solo play does not support this specific control option.
This decision maintains the cooperative spirit initially introduced with the Galaxy series’ multiplayer elements while taking advantage of the new hardware’s unique capabilities.
Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be released globally on October 2, 2024.
Both titles will also be available as standalone digital purchases on the Nintendo Switch eShop, offering further flexibility for fans.
With enhanced graphics, innovative control schemes, and enduring gameplay, Nintendo continues to reinforce the timeless appeal of the Mario franchise on its latest platform.
