The Happy Mask Shop side quest is a longstanding component of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, appearing in the original Nintendo 64 release in 1998 and carried forward into the 2011 Nintendo 3DS remaster developed by Grezzo in collaboration with Nintendo.
In the remake many players are revisiting, the quest tasks child Link with selling rental masks to specific NPCs across Hyrule.
This guide explains where to sell each mask, what you earn, and the reward that follows completion.
How the side quest starts
You can begin the Happy Mask Shop quest as Child Link in Hyrule Castle Town.
After meeting Zelda early in the game, the shop opens and the Happy Mask Salesman asks you to sell rented masks to characters around Hyrule.
Return the rupees you receive to the salesman after each sale to rent the next mask.
Where to sell the Keaton Mask
The Keaton Mask sale starts in Kakariko Village: a guard posted near the Death Mountain gate asks Link to go back to Hyrule Castle Town and retrieve the Keaton Mask for him.
Journalistically put: the guard instructs Link to fetch the Keaton Mask from Hyrule Castle Town, and once sold the guard will wear it for the remainder of the game.
After completing this sale you can return the rupees to the Happy Mask Salesman to rent the next mask.
Where to sell the Skull Mask
The Skull Mask is bought by the lone Skull Kid in the Lost Woods.
To locate him enter the Lost Woods from Kokiri Forest and take the left path; the Skull Kid is nearby.
He pays less than the rental cost, so players must cover the shortfall when they return to the shop, but the sale still unlocks the next mask rental.
Where to sell the Spooky Mask
The Spooky Mask, which resembles a Redead, is sold to the child who appears in the graveyard during daytime hours.
That buyer pays more than the mask’s rental price, letting you make a small profit.
After this sale you can rent the final mask — though you cannot complete that sale until you have acquired all three Spiritual Stones.
Where to sell the Bunny Hood
The Bunny Hood buyer is a running man who appears on Hyrule Field after Link obtains the third Spiritual Stone.
He moves across the field and can be intercepted during day or night (he slows down at night); one common spawn point is near the Zora River exit.
He pays 200 rupees for the Bunny Hood, leaving you with a net gain after returning the rental fee.
Unlocking the Mask of Truth and extra masks
Once you return the funds from selling the Bunny Hood, the Happy Mask Salesman allows you to rent any mask at will.
The shop’s inventory will also include the Goron, Zora, and Gerudo masks; these do not change abilities but alter NPC dialogue.
The Mask of Truth becomes available and is notable because it reveals hidden thoughts of many NPCs, providing extra world-building and character details.
Closing notes
This walkthrough is based on the established mechanics of Ocarina of Time and its official 3DS remaster.
For players compiling completion lists or preparing speedruns, the Happy Mask Shop remains a compact but rewarding side quest that intersects with core progression (the Spiritual Stones) and offers unique conversational insights via the Mask of Truth.
