Ubisoft's iconic Rayman franchise has long been a cornerstone of the publisher's portfolio, beloved for its inventive platforming gameplay and whimsical art style.
While fans have awaited news of a modern return on platforms like the Nintendo Switch, it has now emerged that a major Rayman project once in development was shelved by Ubisoft in 2021.
According to a former Ubisoft employee’s recently updated LinkedIn profile, the studio was actively working on a Rayman trial project under tentative titles such as "Rayman Forever" and "Story of Rayman." This initiative, which involved detailed research and innovative redesigns of key elements like the game's logo and home screen, was ultimately abandoned before making its way to eager audiences.
The developer shared, "In 2021, I had the opportunity to work at Ubisoft on a trial project focused on Rayman.
Despite our team’s efforts, the project did not move forward."
The project prompted significant internal deliberation at Ubisoft, as the company sought to reimagine one of the games that had launched its studio to global prominence.
"Ubisoft tasked us with exploring a redesign of the Rayman brand, including research into fresh visuals for the game's logo and user interface," the former developer stated.
The effort reflected Ubisoft's desire to make any new edition of Rayman both a creative and commercial success, with detailed planning and research showing the company’s commitment to its flagship franchise.
While this particular project was ultimately set aside in 2021, the Rayman series has enjoyed strong sales and critical acclaim since its debut in 1995, with Rayman Legends—developed by Ubisoft Montpellier—finding particular success on the Nintendo Switch and other platforms.
Ubisoft continues to acknowledge Rayman's vital role in its history; in recent years, Rayman made a comeback in DLC for games like Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, further cementing his popularity with Nintendo audiences.
Notably, Ubisoft has confirmed that work on a new Rayman project is currently underway, although details remain under wraps.
With Rayman's enduring appeal and the continued expansion of the Nintendo Switch library via the eShop and through Nintendo Direct showcases, fans remain hopeful that the limbless hero will return to center stage in the near future.
For now, the story of the canceled Rayman Forever and Story of Rayman project stands as a testament to the brand’s ongoing resonance—and to Ubisoft’s ongoing drive to get it just right for its global audience.
