The Prince of Persia Universe team—well-known within series fan circles—has unveiled an ambitious, fan-driven project to modernize the iconic action-adventure platformer originally released in the early 2000s for PC, Xbox, PlayStation 2, and GameCube.
Announced on April 15, 2026, the project is in "early development" and seeks to bring stunning, next-generation visuals to the original game on PC.
Rather than launching a complete, standalone remake, the fan collective intends to deliver a comprehensive mod designed to enhance the game's 3D models and environmental details.
Specifically, Prince of Persia Universe stated that the mod would "replace most of the game's 3D assets with high-quality models and leverage global illumination using state-of-the-art path tracing technology through RTX Remix." The goal is to maintain the authentic gameplay and feel of the original while significantly elevating its graphical presentation.
To participate and experience the upgraded visuals, players will need to own a legitimate copy of the classic Prince of Persia title, a requirement the team believes will respect Ubisoft’s intellectual property and potentially circumvent legal challenges.
At present, the project is entirely volunteer-driven, with no paid roles available.
The modders are reaching out to the broader game development and modding community, especially 3D artists, texture specialists, programmers, and RTX Remix experts, to join this passion project.
Prince of Persia Universe describes the initiative as "a hobby-driven endeavor focused on long-term development without strict deadlines." They're hoping to attract contributors who are enthusiastic about shaping the future of an influential classic.
The journey to this point has been shaped by Ubisoft’s corporate decisions over the past several years.
Announced at Ubisoft Forward 2020, the official remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was initially developed by Ubisoft Mumbai and Ubisoft Pune with a planned release on January 21, 2021.
Persistent delays led Ubisoft Montreal to take over the project, building upon foundation work from its Indian studios.
Despite reaching key development milestones by late 2023, Ubisoft ultimately cancelled the remake in January 2026, along with several other in-progress titles.
In a personal account following the cancellation, actress Eman Ayaz shared via YouTube how deeply she was affected by the project's end, noting that she learned the news unexpectedly through family and describing it as "the most devastating moment" of her career.
She emphasized that it appeared the project was proceeding smoothly with an intended 2026 release before Ubisoft decided to discontinue its development.
With the official remake no longer in the pipeline, the Prince of Persia Universe fan mod project now stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the franchise and its devoted community.
As the project gains momentum, it offers hope to long-time fans eager to witness the series revived with the power of modern PC hardware and advanced graphics technology.
