Description

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet continue to be a highlight in the Nintendo Switch’s robust lineup, introducing fans to the vibrant region of Paldea and an array of new Pokémon species.

Developed by Game Freak and published by The Pokémon Company, these titles mark the ninth generation in the mainline Pokémon series and have sold over 22 million copies since their worldwide launch on November 18, 2022.

Now, renewed attention is shining on the talented artists behind the games’ newest monsters. Acclaimed Japanese artist Yusuke Kozaki recently took to social media to confirm his role as the designer for four Pokémon featured in Scarlet and Violet: Cetoddle, Cetitan, Varoom, and Revavroom.

To mark this contribution, Kozaki also shared original artwork of these characters, delighting fans who recognize his distinctive style.

Kozaki’s involvement in the Pokémon franchise extends beyond his work on Scarlet and Violet; he previously contributed to Pokémon Sword and Shield and Pokémon GO, and is heralded as the lead character designer for Fire Emblem: Awakening and Fire Emblem Fates—both major releases for Nintendo hardware. In a heartfelt statement, Kozaki described his design philosophy for the new Pokémon, explaining, “We set out to create designs that would bring joy and excitement to players around the globe.

My hope is that every player enjoys their journey across the Paldea region.” His sentiments encapsulate the ethos of the Pokémon series, which has always endeavored to foster a sense of adventure and wonder through innovative creature design and immersive world-building. Kozaki’s work on Pokémon Scarlet and Violet follows notable contributions from other celebrated artists.

Toward the end of 2022, former Pokémon series designer and Sword & Shield Art Director James Turner revealed he was responsible for designing Professor Sada (Scarlet) and Professor Turo (Violet), both central figures in the games’ narratives.

Turner also released concept artwork to highlight his creative process, offering fans a glimpse into the collaborative nature of Pokémon’s development. With the success of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet and the continued engagement from its community, the spotlight on artists like Yusuke Kozaki underscores the lasting impact thoughtful character design has on the franchise’s enduring appeal.

As players continue to explore new regions and encounter new Pokémon, the artistry behind their favorite creatures remains a central part of the magic that has defined Pokémon on the Nintendo Switch and beyond.
