Description

The fan-driven resurgence in classic fighting games takes another leap forward as the team behind the unofficial homebrew adaptation of SNK vs.

Capcom for the Commodore 64 and C128 announces the "Stronger Edition." Developed by Gianluca "RetroGL" Alberico and Jon Eggleton, this new update significantly expands the title's roster and feature set, continuing the momentum of one of the most ambitious retro projects in the scene. First released as an unofficial homage to the Neo Geo classic SNK vs.

Capcom: Match of the Millennium, this Commodore port has grown far beyond a simple demake.

Rather than just converting the handheld favorite, the developers have reimagined the brawler, adding their own enhancements, new characters, and additional arenas.

After several years of iterative development, Alberico and Eggleton launched what was considered the "final" version for C64/C128 in October 2023.

However, their commitment to refining the experience never waned.

Now, with the introduction of the "Stronger Edition"—currently in alpha—players can look forward to the addition of 16 fresh fighters, effectively doubling the total roster to 32 characters.

New entrants include fan favorites like EVIL RYU, VIOLENT KEN, CAMMY, and MORRIGAN, alongside a variety of both SNK and Capcom legends such as HAOHMARU, YASHIRO, AKARI, and ATHENA.

These prominent additions complement the returning lineup from the previous version, featuring staples such as Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Terry Bogard, Mai Shiranui, and Geese Howard. Supporting the development and testing of the Stronger Edition is a dedicated team: Aldo Chiummo composes the updated soundtrack, while Danilo Serrago, Vincenzo Morana, and Salvo Cristaldi handle quality assurance and gameplay testing, ensuring smooth performance and balanced play. One unique aspect of this edition is its use of the Magic Desk 2 (MD2) cartridge format, a new hardware solution spearheaded by CrystalCT.

At present, the Stronger Edition demo is playable exclusively via a modded version of the VICE emulator, as detailed in the project’s release notes.

This approach underscores both the technical ambition and the community focus that have defined this fan port since its inception. The SNK vs.

Capcom: Stronger Edition demo is now available for download, giving Commodore fans and fighting game enthusiasts alike an expanded, contemporary twist on a beloved classic, underscoring the vitality and innovation still present in retro gaming communities.

For those eager to experience 32-character showdowns on classic hardware—or modern emulators—this update represents a landmark accomplishment in fan-driven game development.
