Commodore C64 Ultimate heads back to stores after exclusive Colby distribution deal

The revived Commodore brand has confirmed an exclusive distribution agreement with electronics distributor Colby to place the C64 Ultimate into brick-and-mortar retail for the first time in more than three decades.

The announcement follows the company's recent hardware lineup that includes the original C64 Ultimate, the redesigned 64C, and a Cyberpunk 2077–themed variant.

Background and product lineup

Commodore's modern revival, led publicly by YouTuber Christian Simpson, first gained attention with the C64 Ultimate and subsequently released the 64C, which presents the platform in a different case design.

The company has also expanded beyond heritage hardware, offering a mobile device called the Talkback 8020, which it describes as its best-selling product to date.

All of these products have so far been sold primarily online prior to the Colby partnership.

What the Colby deal entails

According to Commodore's social media update, the company has signed an exclusive retail deal with Colby to bring the C64 back onto store shelves across Europe and into parts of Africa and Asia, and the firm added that work toward U.S. retail is ongoing.

In plain terms, Commodore says it expects to move the C64 Ultimate from direct online sales into mainstream electronics retail locations for the first time in over 30 years.

Colby describes itself as a distributor with a network of 70 retail partners operating more than 500 outlets and a portfolio spanning software, accessories, hardware, and lifestyle brands.

The distributor lists relationships with major entertainment and peripheral companies and says Commodore products distributed via Colby could reach chains such as Media Markt and Argos through its channels.

A special edition and industry context

Alongside the base models, Commodore confirmed a Cyberpunk 2077-themed variant of the C64 Ultimate will be part of the product slate.

The move to physical retail mirrors broader industry patterns where retro hardware and reissues find renewed attention, while retro and indie titles continue to gain visibility on digital storefronts such as the Nintendo eShop and consoles like the Nintendo Switch.

This development marks a notable step for the Commodore revival, transitioning from an online-era boutique operator into traditional retail distribution, leveraging Colby's established retail footprint to widen consumer access to the C64 Ultimate and related products.
