Description

EA's popular free-to-play shooter, Apex Legends, continues to command attention from players on the Nintendo Switch eShop and other major platforms.

Despite recording impressive player engagement since its Switch debut in March 2021, the game's momentum has slowed, with both fans and executives recognizing the franchise is at a crossroads.

Developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts (EA), Apex Legends has been pivotal in establishing the company's reputation for long-lasting gaming franchises. This week, EA's focus surrounded the unveiling of 'Battlefield Labs' ahead of the next major Battlefield entry.

However, the company made it clear that Apex Legends remains an important part of its overall strategy.

During a recent financial discussion, EA CEO Andrew Wilson acknowledged the game's current downturn but reaffirmed EA's commitment to the live-service shooter.

"Our track record as a company includes building franchises that thrive for decades.

We fully expect Apex Legends to follow this path, benefitting from extensive updates over time.

At some stage, there will be an even larger, more meaningful evolution—what some might label as Apex 2.0," Wilson articulated, emphasizing that the present iteration of Apex Legends will not be its last. Wilson further clarified that any substantial update or new version for Apex Legends will come only after the launch of EA's forthcoming Battlefield game, which is slated for release within fiscal year 2026.

"It makes sense not to overlap these launches.

We believe a major Apex Legends update will likely follow Battlefield’s debut, as the development team is diligently mapping out the future of the franchise.

Over the long term, we will expand the ways we support our core competitive player base while also welcoming new communities to experience the best of Apex," Wilson explained. Since launching on Nintendo Switch, Apex Legends has continued to receive regular support, featuring new seasonal content and technical improvements.

The free-to-download title remains available via the Switch eShop, ensuring Nintendo fans have ongoing access to the fast-paced battle royale action.

While EA has not officially announced plans for Battlefield or Apex Legends sequels on the anticipated Switch 2 hardware, Andrew Wilson expressed interest in exploring how key EA franchises—including EA Sports FC and Madden NFL—could succeed on new Nintendo platforms, suggesting that EA's portfolio "can find real energy" when introduced to new audiences. As industry attention shifts toward the next Battlefield and discussions of an eventual Apex Legends 2.0, Nintendo Switch users can anticipate sustained support for Apex Legends.

EA’s long-term vision signals a firm commitment to evolving its competitive shooter offerings, both on current hardware and future Nintendo platforms.
