Description

Square Enix has announced Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined, a ground-up remake of the classic RPG, set to launch on Nintendo Switch and other platforms on February 5, 2026.

The game reinvigorates one of the most distinctive entries in the acclaimed Dragon Quest series, bringing its memorable characters and darker narrative themes to a new generation of players. Originally released in 2000, Dragon Quest VII distinguished itself through a more somber and intricate storyline compared to earlier series installments.

The remake's producer, Takeshi Ichikawa, spoke with GameSpark about the team's vision, emphasizing that the game's enduring emotional depth was a key driver behind its return.

"We initiated Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined because we recognize how the game's unique atmosphere and tone continue to resonate strongly with today's players.

When VII first launched, it stood out for its darker and more poignant storylines.

Since then, audiences have become even more receptive to games with mature and complex narratives.

With this new version, we aim to ensure modern players can immerse themselves more deeply in VII’s storytelling and character emotions," Ichikawa explained. Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined is set to arrive shortly after the release of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, also from Square Enix, scheduled for January 20, 2026.

Built with beautiful diorama-inspired visuals and optimized for the Nintendo Switch, Reimagined preserves the core narrative while streamlining the story’s pacing and introducing key gameplay enhancements designed for contemporary audiences. The upcoming title will retain the original's emotional impact, with updated mechanics and improved visual fidelity.

Square Enix’s commitment to honoring the legacy of Dragon Quest VII while offering thoughtful refinements demonstrates the company's ongoing dedication to its renowned RPG franchises. Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined will be available both physically and digitally via the Nintendo eShop.

With this release, the company continues to expand its library of high-quality remakes on the Nintendo Switch, reaffirming the platform's status as a hub for RPG enthusiasts.

As the February 2026 release date approaches, fans and newcomers alike can look forward to experiencing a faithful yet refreshed journey through one of the most memorable chapters in Dragon Quest history.
