Square Enix has released a fresh batch of information and screenshots for Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, the upcoming monster-collection RPG due on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 on December 3, 2026.

The developer’s latest update focuses on two core gameplay systems — Quick Scouting and Joint Battles — and introduces a key story figure, priestess Almira (voiced by Grace Saif).

These details add clarity to how players will recruit monsters, tackle large encounters, and progress through Witherwood’s narrative.

Quick Scouting: faster recruitment without combat

One of the headline features is Quick Scouting, a non-combat recruitment method.

Instead of engaging wild monsters and using a Show of Force in battle, players can now throw meat directly at monsters found in the field to attempt immediate recruitment.

Square Enix explains that higher-quality cuts improve the chance of success, and some monsters prefer unusual meats, encouraging players to experiment with different items.

If party or reserve slots are full, newly recruited creatures are sent to the monster depot automatically.

The game also includes a dedicated Scout Run enclosure at Witherwood where players receive a quota of Scouty Snacks to use Quick Scouting on rare monsters that don’t appear in the overworld.

Square Enix notes that more monsters will become available in the Scout Run as players advance through the story.

Joint Battles: coordinated fights against massive foes

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World introduces Joint Battles for fights against massive monsters that a single party cannot handle.

In these encounters each side commands two parties that share HP and MP gauges; players can issue tactics to reserves during combat.

Massive enemies feature Pet Hates — actions that build a Rage Gauge — and when the gauge fills they unleash stronger attacks.

After the monster tires, it becomes vulnerable, creating a window for concentrated damage.

Joint Battles are accessible in the single-player arena after progressing through the story, and in Online Joint Battles players can team up with up to four friends or other players worldwide.

Winning before the end of round 10 can earn specific rewards, per Square Enix’s information.

Characters, monsters, and story context

Square Enix also highlighted Almira, the Watcher of the Archeagles, who once protected Witherwood alongside the two Archeagles Michelos and Lucifus but has been missing since the Evil Eye event.

Protagonists Bianca and Nera lead the player-facing cast.

New monsters unveiled include Hammerhood (a beast wielding a mallet), See slug (a nature-family monster with the Bottom Feeder talent), and Panda pilgrim (a traditionally garbed beast with a sharp walking stick).

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World launches December 3, 2026 for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.

Square Enix’s recent update and screenshots provide a clearer look at recruitment systems, large-scale combat, and story threads ahead of release.
