Square Enix has officially launched a highly anticipated upgrade for Dragon Quest III HD-2D, allowing owners of the Nintendo Switch version to enjoy enhanced resolution and improved performance on the new Nintendo Switch 2.
The announcement arrived during the recent Japanese Partner Direct, reinforcing Nintendo’s ongoing strategy of supporting fan-favorite titles with platform enhancements ahead of major new releases.
Dragon Quest III HD-2D, which reimagines the classic RPG with a unique blend of pixel art and modern visual effects, was a highlight of Square Enix’s dedication to the beloved franchise.
The new upgrade gives current players a clear reason to revisit the title on the Nintendo Switch 2, introducing higher resolution output and performance optimizations with no additional charge for existing owners.
The update positions Dragon Quest III HD-2D as one of the first major Square Enix games to leverage the increased capabilities of Nintendo’s latest hardware.
In a detailed FAQ posted on the official Square Enix website, the company clarified the nature of the upgrade: “This is a purely visual update, offering users the choice between prioritizing frame rate or enhanced graphics,” the statement explains.
Notably, Square Enix confirmed that no new content or gameplay features would be added through this upgrade, focusing strictly on graphical fidelity to support seamless save file transfers between the Switch and Switch 2 versions.
This feature contrasts with the upcoming Dragon Quest 1+2 HD-2D collection, which is also set to launch on both the Switch and Switch 2 in the coming months.
Unlike Dragon Quest III, Square Enix has stated that there will be no free platform upgrade path for the remake compilation.
This decision likely stems from the technical requirements of preserving save data compatibility, as the 1+2 HD-2D release does not support save transfers between versions.
While Square Enix has not detailed changes in file size between the original Switch port and the Switch 2 upgrade, it is expected to match the size of the PC and PlayStation 5 releases, which are approximately 20 GB.
The free Switch 2 upgrade for Dragon Quest III HD-2D is now live.
Owners simply need to ensure their Nintendo Switch 2 is connected to the internet to download the enhanced version.
This move exemplifies Square Enix and Nintendo’s continued support for the HD-2D series and strengthens the value of early adoption for Switch 2 owners.
Looking ahead, the Japanese Partner Direct also showcased several new Square Enix titles and exclusive accessories for the Nintendo Switch 2, ensuring a strong software and hardware lineup for fans of both the platform and the publisher.
As the Switch 2 lifecycle begins, initiatives like this free upgrade set a promising precedent for future cross-generation support.
