Square Enix has confirmed that Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World will arrive on both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 on 3 December 2026, launching at retail and digitally via the Nintendo eShop worldwide.

The announcement was accompanied by a new trailer that expands on the game's cast, antagonists and monster-focused mechanics.

Background and premise

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World draws characters Bianca and Nera from Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride into a standalone monsters-focused adventure.

According to Square Enix's storyline summary, the two heroines search for the fabled Leaves of Life to heal their ailing fathers.

A mysterious creature named Fluffy visits them at night and leads them to the Kingdom of Witherwood, where the Leaves are said to grow.

The studio explains that Witherwood has been devastated by malevolent forces, and Fluffy grants Bianca and Nera the ability to befriend local monsters so they can restore the Leaves of Life.

Characters and voice cast

Square Enix's trailer introduces key allies and antagonists.

Bianca, voiced by Eva Feiler, is presented as a bright, dependable young woman who looks after her companions.

Nera, voiced by Kimberly Capera, is described as kind and eager to help.

They will be joined by the passionate Debora (Rebecca Hanssen), the unusual but loyal Fluffy (Caius Nicholas) and the eccentric Fizzy (Harriet Carmichael).

The trailer also introduces Thespidor, identified as the misdirector of the Tragedian Players and dubbed a 'showrunner' figure associated with darkness below.

Square Enix states that Thespidor created the meteocite crystals shown in the footage, though the publisher has not expanded on his motives.

Gameplay and features

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World continues the series' monster-collecting tradition.

Square Enix confirms players can befriend more than 500 monsters from across the Dragon Quest series alongside new additions.

Recruited creatures can be deployed in battle or used in synthesis systems to create stronger allies, echoing classic Monster series mechanics.
