Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, Square Enix’s acclaimed reimagining of the storied RPG, has just received a significant performance update for Nintendo Switch 2 owners.
The announcement was made during the recent Japanese Nintendo Direct broadcast, bringing enhanced display options and a resolution boost that is immediately available to all players who own the game on Nintendo’s next-generation hardware.
The free update introduces a new setting in the game’s Display menu, allowing players to tailor their experience to their preferred balance of performance and visuals.
Square Enix now offers two distinct modes: Performance Mode, which delivers a silky-smooth 60 frames per second with slightly softer visuals, and Graphics Mode, emphasizing sharper, crisper images at a steady 30 frames per second.
This addition ensures the game runs better than ever on Nintendo Switch 2 compared to its predecessor, giving both new and returning adventurers updated choices to match their gameplay style.
More details about the patch can be found on the official Square Enix Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake website.
Beyond the performance patch, Dragon Quest fans received even more to celebrate as Square Enix revealed a brand new trailer for the hotly anticipated Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake.
Slated for release on both Nintendo Switch 1 and Nintendo Switch 2 on October 30, 2024, the game continues the publisher’s commitment to revitalizing the roots of the legendary franchise for modern platforms with its signature HD-2D visual blend.
The new trailer, which also debuted in English, highlights an exciting addition: the inclusion of the Princess of Cannock as a playable character in Dragon Quest II, providing further narrative depth and a more rounded party dynamic.
As established in the lore, the Princess of Cannock is a key member of the royal family, fitting seamlessly into the legacy of classic Dragon Quest storytelling.
Unlike Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, which receives its performance bump via a free download, Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake will be launching as a native release for both Switch hardware generations, including as a Game Key-Card.
However, Square Enix has confirmed there will not be an upgrade path for existing Switch 1 owners to transfer their purchase to the Switch 2 version.
The Japanese Partner Showcase demonstrated that Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake runs exceptionally well on Nintendo Switch 2, delivering a visually impressive and smooth experience that builds further excitement ahead of its global release.
With these updates and reveals, Square Enix continues to honor the Dragon Quest legacy while adapting to modern gaming expectations.
