Square Enix is set to make waves this fall with the highly anticipated release of Dragon Quest I & II HD Remake, launching on Nintendo Switch and other platforms on October 30.
As the original RPGs gain a new lease on life, the developer has revealed a significant addition exclusive to this edition: an entirely new region known as the Seabed, designed specifically for Dragon Quest II.
The Seabed Region: A New Underwater Adventure
The Seabed region, as demonstrated in newly released footage, expands the classic Dragon Quest II world with immersive underwater exploration.
Players will access this area after acquiring their boat, opening up a fresh aquatic environment beneath the waves.
The Mersea, a community of merfolk, resides here—facing imminent danger from a growing monster threat.
This addition enriches the narrative with never-before-seen characters and locations, providing new quests and challenges for both series veterans and newcomers alike.
New Dungeons, Foes, and Story Content
Among the Seabed’s formidable challenges are new dungeons populated with unique enemies.
One notable adversary is Mariella, a champion serving the series’ primary antagonist Hargon.
The expanded storyline delves deeper into the struggle to protect the Mersea, standing as a testament to Square Enix’s commitment to meaningful enhancements for the HD Remake.
During the recent Xbox Tokyo Game Show Showcase, Dragon Quest I & II HD Remake producer Haysaka Masaaki presented an exclusive gameplay segment highlighting the Seabed’s setting and features.
This follows previous teasers and footage, including a brief look during the Nintendo Direct event on September 12 in Japan and a series of content reveals leading up to launch.
A Major Release for Nintendo Switch and Classic JRPG Fans
The return of Dragon Quest I & II in HD underscores Square Enix’s dedication to reviving its most celebrated franchises for modern audiences.
With the Nintendo Switch already a hub for classic RPG remasters and thriving on a robust user base, this remake is positioned to reach a new generation of players while delighting longtime fans.
Dragon Quest I & II HD Remake will be available for purchase through the Nintendo eShop and will support multiple languages, reflecting the series’ international appeal.
As anticipation mounts and more details emerge, the inclusion of the Seabed region demonstrates a blend of reverence for the source material and a readiness to innovate.
With the launch date fast approaching, the remaster looks set to offer an enriched journey across new and familiar landscapes.
Stay tuned for further updates as Square Enix brings these legendary adventures back to life.
