Chrono Trigger Remake: Yuji Horii Addresses Fan Requests After Recent Rumors
Chrono Trigger, the legendary role-playing game developed by Square (now Square Enix) and launched in 1995 on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), remains a towering achievement in JRPG history.
Lauded for its ambitious time-travel plot, unforgettable characters, and innovative battle mechanics, Chrono Trigger has been heralded as one of the industry's finest RPGs.
Over the decades, the game has enjoyed several re-releases, most notably on the Nintendo DS, with enhancements such as an updated translation, dual-screen features, new dungeons, and additional endings—including nods to its spiritual successor, Chrono Cross.
Speculation about a potential Chrono Trigger remake reached a peak following reports from Comicon in Naples, Italy, in early May.
During the event, Yuji Horii—the mastermind behind the Dragon Quest franchise and one of Chrono Trigger’s original creative leads—spoke to fans and participated in an interview session.
Initial attendee reports suggested that Horii had revealed plans for a remake of Chrono Trigger; however, upon further review of the event’s footage, it became apparent that his comments had been misinterpreted due to mistranslation by his own translator.
No official announcement regarding a remake was made during the event.
In a subsequent interview with outlet Gamereactor on May 8, Yuji Horii directly addressed the mounting fan requests and clarified his stance on a possible update.
"It has been a long time.
Yes, I want to do something.
Currently, Dragon Quest has seen 3, 1-2 [HD-2D] Remakes.
I get a lot of requests for the remake of Chrono Trigger as well, and so I am starting to contemplate on it," Horii explained.
This confirmation indicates that, while there are no definitive plans at this time, the demand for a Chrono Trigger remake is well-known among its creators and squarely on their radar.
Chrono Trigger’s enduring popularity is evidenced by its impressive sales and repeated success across platforms.
The Nintendo DS version alone earned praise for its thoughtful modernization and additional content.
Meanwhile, Square Enix’s recent use of the acclaimed HD-2D graphical style for Dragon Quest III and other classic remakes has fueled speculation and hope for a similar treatment for Chrono Trigger, potentially on platforms like Nintendo Switch or via the Nintendo eShop.
While rumors have subsided with Horii’s clarification, the momentum behind a Chrono Trigger remake shows no sign of diminishing.
For now, the gaming community can only wait and continue to express its enthusiasm, hopeful that this JRPG masterpiece will return in a new form for longtime fans and a new generation alike.
