Square Enix has released technical and release details for Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition on Nintendo Switch 2, confirming performance targets, content inclusions and file-transfer limitations ahead of the game's September 24, 2026 launch.

The Definitive Edition builds on the previously released Nintendo Switch version and carries the same extra story content and presentation options introduced in the original Definitive Edition.

Performance and image modes

Square Enix confirmed the Switch 2 edition offers two optimisation modes that let players prioritise frame rate or image quality.

In Performance Priority Mode the game targets 60 frames per second at a 1080p render resolution.

Image Quality Priority Mode targets 30 frames per second at 1440p.

The company did not provide separate specifications for docked versus handheld operation; Nintendo has stated the Switch 2 display tops out at 1080p.

Save transfer and upgrade details

Square Enix has also stated that save data cannot be transferred from the Nintendo Switch release to the Nintendo Switch 2 version.

The developer did not offer an upgrade path for owners of the original Switch release; players who previously purchased Dragon Quest 11 S on Nintendo Switch will need to purchase the Switch 2 version separately, with the price for the re-purchase reported at $40.

Definitive Edition content

According to Square Enix's overview for the Switch 2 release, the Definitive Edition includes all additions from the original Definitive Edition: new character-focused story chapters, Japanese voice tracks plus additional English voiceovers, the ability to switch between 3D and 2D visual modes, and an orchestral score.

The Switch 2 package also carries several special item sets including the Trodain Set (hero appearance-altering equipment), the Baby Boar Set (appearance-altering equipment for Veronica) and the Happy Adventurer Set (consumables and seeds of skill).

Launch and availability

Dragon Quest 11 S launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on September 24, 2026.

Square Enix’s official materials summarise the storytelling core of the title as an origin-focused chapter in the Dragon Quest saga that follows a young villager—referred to in series lore as the Luminary—on a journey to discover what it means to be a hero.

This release gives Switch 2 owners a native-optimised version of Dragon Quest 11 S with selectable performance profiles, but it will require a standalone purchase for existing Switch owners and does not support cross-generation save migration.
