Description

Square Enix has officially confirmed that Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake will launch for both Nintendo Switch and the highly anticipated Switch 2 on October 30, 2025.

As part of its comprehensive preparations for the game’s release, the renowned developer and publisher has shared key information about how the game will function across both current and next-generation Nintendo hardware.

This announcement follows growing interest from fans regarding cross-generation support and compatibility, especially as the Nintendo platform landscape continues to evolve. The Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake brings classic JRPG experiences to life with modernized visuals—utilizing the signature "HD-2D" style previously seen in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake and the Octopath Traveler series.

This updated visual approach combines pixel art with 3D effects, offering veteran and new Dragon Quest fans a fresh way to experience these foundational titles.

Square Enix has continued to deliver acclaimed remakes and RPG experiences for Nintendo Switch, consistently meeting high expectations in technical quality and nostalgic storytelling. Square Enix has provided clear guidance about game compatibility between the two console versions.

According to the official FAQ on the Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake website, users should be aware that there is no upgrade pathway available for players who purchase the Nintendo Switch version and later wish to play on Switch 2.

Instead, the publisher states, "There is no upgrade path currently available or planned.

Please buy your copy for whichever system you would like to play it on." This decision underscores the importance for customers to carefully select the version that aligns with their preferred platform. In addition, save data transfer is not supported between Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 editions.

Players will not be able to migrate their progress from one version to the other, which makes initial platform choice even more critical.

Furthermore, download codes for in-game items are not cross-compatible—meaning items redeemed in one version cannot be accessed in the other.

The sole exception is bonus content earned through save data from Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, which Square Enix confirms will be recognized by both versions, offering a small incentive for longtime series fans. It’s also worth noting that the physical cartridge release for Nintendo Switch 2 will be distributed on a proprietary "game key card." Square Enix has yet to disclose the exact file size for either the digital or physical versions, but more details are expected closer to launch.

Players interested in maximizing their storage should stay tuned for this information. To complement the standard editions, Square Enix has announced a physical collector’s edition for both Switch and Switch 2, signaling the publisher’s continued commitment to collectors and dedicated fans.

Details on package contents and regional availability are available through official channels. With key compatibility decisions made and an official release date set, Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake is poised to be one of the most significant JRPG launches on the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 eShop in late 2025.
