Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake Release Date, Compatibility, and Switch 2 Details Confirmed by Square Enix

Square Enix has officially confirmed that Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake will launch for both Nintendo Switch and the highly anticipated Switch 2 on October 30, 2025.

As part of its comprehensive preparations for the game’s release, the renowned developer and publisher has shared key information about how the game will function across both current and next-generation Nintendo hardware.

Instead, the publisher states, "There is no upgrade path currently available or planned.

Please buy your copy for whichever system you would like to play it on." This decision underscores the importance for customers to carefully select the version that aligns with their preferred platform. In addition, save data transfer is not supported between Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 editions.

Players will not be able to migrate their progress from one version to the other, which makes initial platform choice even more critical.

The sole exception is bonus content earned through save data from Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, which Square Enix confirms will be recognized by both versions, offering a small incentive for longtime series fans. It’s also worth noting that the physical cartridge release for Nintendo Switch 2 will be distributed on a proprietary "game key card." Square Enix has yet to disclose the exact file size for either the digital or physical versions, but more details are expected closer to launch.
