Donkey Kong Bananza on Nintendo Switch 2: A Groundbreaking Return for Nintendo’s Iconic Ape Donkey Kong Bananza is set to deliver a dynamic new adventure for fans of Nintendo’s legendary ape, launching globally on July 17, 2025 for both retail and digital purchase via the Nintendo eShop.

Developed in-house by Nintendo, Donkey Kong Bananza is the first new mainline Donkey Kong game in over two decades, arriving 26 years after the release of Donkey Kong 64.

This highly anticipated title brings the iconic character to the powerful Nintendo Switch 2 hardware for an experience that blends sandbox gameplay, physics-based destruction, and vibrant personality. A Fresh Adventure in the World of Donkey Kong The story propels Donkey Kong and his group of prospector monkeys to Ingot Isle, a distant land where a mysterious substance called Banandium has been discovered.

These edible, banana-shaped Banandium Gems serve as both a plot device and a collectible.

The mining expedition takes a dramatic turn when the enigmatic company VoidCo intervenes, seizing the Banandium Gems and plunging Ingot Isle beneath the surface.

To reclaim the stolen treasure, Donkey Kong must confront these new adversaries in a quest that trades vine-swinging for underground, puzzle-infused brawling. In a recent hands-on demo, Donkey Kong Bananza showcased its expressive animation and a robust moveset designed for both veterans and newcomers.

Players can execute a variety of punches and special moves using different controller buttons, including upward, forward, and downward strikes, dive punches, and a signature Hand Slap.

Unique terrain—ranging from sticky dirt and explosive gold to rock-breaking boomrocks—introduces environmental puzzles, encouraging players to experiment with the game’s destructible world. Nintendo’s design team clearly took inspiration from beloved titles like Super Mario Odyssey, with open-ended areas that invite curiosity and creativity.

The demo highlighted large sandbox environments where players are free to tackle main objectives, seek out hidden Banandium Gems, complete Challenge Courses, or interact with returning characters such as Cranky Kong.

The freedom of exploration and variety of tasks provide plenty for completionists and casual players alike. Notably, the character animation in Donkey Kong Bananza stands out.

Donkey Kong’s expressive reactions—such as licking his lips at Banandium Gems, inflating his cheeks underwater, or chest-beating when you shake the controller—add an infectious sense of personality to the experience.

The game’s soundtrack and audio cues also integrate into the gameplay, with musical elements triggering special events and forming part of navigation or puzzle-solving mechanics. Bananza’s progression system revolves around collecting gold (which functions as an extra life system), Banandium Chips (tradeable for bananas), and Fossils (tradeable for cosmetic fashion items).

Players can use these rewards at various in-game vendors, adding layers of replayability and customization. The sheer number of interactive elements and secrets in the demo points to a full game packed with content and surprises.

Nintendo’s commitment to quality and inventive design is clear, promising a memorable new chapter for Donkey Kong as he barrels onto the Nintendo Switch 2. Donkey Kong Bananza will be available worldwide on July 17, 2025, through both physical retailers and the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch 2.

The wait for Nintendo’s beloved primate’s return is almost over, and early impressions suggest it’s shaping up to be one of the platform’s standout releases.
