Nintendo has once again proven its dominance in the gaming industry, as the company’s latest financial report reveals the Nintendo Switch 2 has surpassed 6 million hardware sales worldwide just seven weeks after launch.

Official figures released by Nintendo confirm that as of July 24th, Switch 2 has not only exceeded expectations but set a new benchmark for early console adoption, driven by its robust first-party software and an enthusiastic fan base. The Nintendo Switch 2 was officially released on June 5th, marking a significant milestone in Nintendo’s hardware history.

According to the report, as of June 30th, the company sold 5.82 million Switch 2 consoles, with a staggering 3.5 million units purchased within the first four days alone.

This impressive beginning underscores the demand for Nintendo’s latest hardware across key markets. Along with the surge in hardware sales, Nintendo also highlighted remarkable performance for its flagship launch title, Mario Kart World.

Within the same of seven-week period, global sales of Mario Kart World stood at 5.63 million units, a figure inclusive of digital downloads and the widely popular bundled editions.

This places Mario Kart World as the lead title for Switch 2 attach rates, further solidifying its role as a system seller. Overall, Switch 2 software sales reached 8.67 million units by the end of June, showcasing strong demand for new titles on Nintendo’s next-generation platform.

For context, the original Switch system, during the same launch window, recorded just 0.98 million units sold, with a lifetime total now standing at 153.10 million units.

However, the introduction of Switch 2 has seen the original hardware’s Q1 sales drop by over 53% year-on-year, indicating a significant market shift toward the new platform. Breaking down Switch 2 hardware sales by region, Nintendo reported: - Japan: 1.27 million units - Americas: 2.08 million units - Europe: 1.34 million units - Other regions: 1.13 million units Notably, Donkey Kong Bananza, launched to critical acclaim in July, falls outside the current financial results and is anticipated to further boost software sales in upcoming quarters. As anticipated with a highly successful console launch, Nintendo’s gross profit surged by 21.4% year-on-year, reaching 185.1 billion yen.

However, the company noted a decline in profit margins by 29.5 points, landing at 32.3%, due to lowered profitability on new hardware. Despite the rapid uptake and sellouts driving Switch 2’s supply-demand gap globally, Nintendo maintained its forecast from May, aiming to sell 15 million Switch 2 units and 45 million software units within the current financial year.

A company spokesperson acknowledged the situation, stating that demand for the new system continues to outpace supply in multiple countries, and expressed regret over the ongoing inconvenience to consumers. Nintendo’s Switch 2 launch represents a formidable start for the new generation, with Mario Kart World’s attach rate reinforcing the critical importance of strong first-party releases.

As Nintendo continues to navigate high demand and software momentum, the Switch 2 looks poised for ongoing success throughout 2024 and beyond.
