Nintendo’s latest generation console, the Nintendo Switch 2, continues to set the pace in Japan, snatching the lion’s share of both software and hardware sales for the week ending July 27, according to new data published by Famitsu.
The period saw the Switch 2 command the podium positions, showcasing the platform's overwhelming popularity among Japanese gamers and the region’s enduring enthusiasm for Nintendo’s flagship titles.
Taking gold once again is 'Mario Kart World', the much-anticipated entry in the long-standing Mario Kart series, which posted an impressive 76,224 units sold for the week.
Its cumulative sales have now reached over 1.57 million units, underlining its status as a runaway bestseller on Nintendo Switch 2.
Hot on its heels, 'Donkey Kong Bananza', also a Switch 2 exclusive, maintained a strong second place with 53,951 units shifted, pushing its overall tally to upwards of 181,000 since launch.
The debut of 'Super Mario Party Jamboree - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV' made a strong impression, selling 18,169 units in its opening week to claim third place.
Notably, an earlier version of the game for the original Nintendo Switch also made the top ten, illustrating the franchise’s broad appeal across hardware generations.
In fact, the Switch version of 'Super Mario Party Jamboree' rounded out the chart at tenth, with lifetime sales reaching over 1.35 million units.
Meanwhile, PlayStation 5’s 'Wuchang: Fallen Feathers' broke into the otherwise Nintendo-dominated top five, registering 14,490 sales for a robust debut.
Despite this, the Switch family continued to showcase remarkable staying power.
Mainstays like 'Mario Kart 8 Deluxe', 'Minecraft', and 'Animal Crossing: New Horizons' all maintained impressive weekly figures, with 'Animal Crossing' surpassing a staggering 8.18 million cumulative sales in Japan.
Switching focus to hardware, the Nintendo Switch 2 led the market with 92,013 units sold, pushing its total units in Japan to nearly 1.85 million.
The momentum for the Switch 2 comes at the expense of its predecessor models, but the Nintendo Switch OLED and Lite variants also continued to outpace rival consoles, moving 7,344 and 4,706 units respectively.
Sony’s PlayStation 5 trailed with 4,093 sales, and Microsoft’s Xbox Series consoles remained at lower volumes, reflecting regional preferences.
Famitsu’s latest figures further solidify Nintendo’s grip on the Japanese gaming landscape.
With the Switch 2’s rapid adoption rate and enduring popularity of marquee first-party franchises like Mario Kart, Donkey Kong, and Super Mario Party, Nintendo’s domination of both software and hardware charts appears unlikely to slow anytime soon.
As the company's lineup continues to expand, industry watchers will be keen to see if future competitors can break this powerful streak.
