Zool Physical Re-Release for Sega Mega Drive: 33 Games Confirms Collector's Editions

33 Games has confirmed a premium physical re-release of Gremlin Interactive's 1992 platformer Zool for the Sega Mega Drive, with shipments scheduled for summer 2026.

The boutique publisher described the project as an officially licensed, archive-minded edition produced in collaboration with Umbra Dynamics and several partner studios.

The announcement follows a LinkedIn teaser first posted in March 2026 and a fuller update from 33 Games published on 19 May 2026.

Background and historical context

Zool originally debuted on the Amiga in 1992 and was subsequently ported to multiple consoles, including the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, SNES, Master System, Game Boy and Game Gear.

A sequel, Zool 2, arrived in 1993 on platforms such as the Amiga, CD32 and the Atari Jaguar.

The character has seen modern revivals too, including the PC/console release Zool Redimensioned on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

Editions, pricing and contents

33 Games will offer two paid editions: the Zool Premium Collector's Edition priced at £59.99, limited to 2,750 copies, and the Zool Ultimate Archive Edition at £129.99, limited to 150 copies.

The Premium Collector's Edition includes a Sega Mega Drive-compatible 32MB cartridge housed in a classic clamshell case, plus three premium collector art cards and a die-cut vinyl Zool sticker.

The Ultimate Archive Edition bundles the full Premium Collector's contents with a deluxe archive-grade presentation box, A Gremlin in the Works premium hardcover book published by Bitmap Books, a ribbon separator beneath the hardcover, and a translucent green audio cassette titled Music of the nth Dimension—Side A featuring the original Zool soundtrack and Side B containing remixes.

The Ultimate package also includes a numbered and signed certificate of authenticity, a 50mm heavyweight Zool collector's coin, and a die-cut presentation wallet for the coin.

Presentation and partners

33 Games described the production as emphasizing archival-quality presentation and materials.

In journalistic terms, the publisher said the release was produced with an authentic physical presentation, carefully selected materials, and collector-grade finishing intended to deliver a definitive, long-lived physical artifact.

33 Games listed additional collaborators in its announcement, including Hilltop, Hologram Ghost and Urbanscan Ltd—the latter known for a prior iOS release of Zool.

The publisher has positioned this release as a statement of intent for its boutique approach to retro physical publishing, combining a classic Mega Drive cartridge with premium ancillary items for collectors and retro enthusiasts.
