Madou Monogatari’s Sega Saturn fan translation arrives decades after the series debuted on the MSX2 in 1990 and spawned the Puyo Puyo franchise.

Developed originally by Compile, Madou Monogatari introduced Arle Nadja and established a foundation that would later evolve into one of the most recognisable puzzle series in gaming.

The Sega Saturn entry, released in 1998 and published by Sega Enterprises, has long been a Japan-exclusive title with a complicated development history and no official western localisation—until the recent fan translation patch.

This week, hacker paul_met and translator brandnewscooby released an English-language patch for the 1998 Sega Saturn Madou Monogatari.

That release fills a gap left by prior fan efforts: while fan translations have existed for several Madou Monogatari ports, including PC-98 releases, the Saturn version had not previously received a public English patch.

In documentation accompanying the patch, brandnewscooby reflected on the personal importance of the franchise and the Saturn release.

They described Puyo Puyo as a series that holds deep personal nostalgia and recalled late-night import play sessions on CRT displays.

They also noted the Saturn game’s difficult development cycle: Compile underwent restructuring and was acquired by Sega, and the Saturn project was repeatedly reworked amid staff turnover and budget constraints.

Given those circumstances, they said it is notable the game shipped at all and that the final product shows a surprising level of polish.

According to the patch notes, the translation project took roughly a year to reach a first draft owing to a substantial script and competing commitments.

The patch implements multiple technical and presentation improvements to support English text on Saturn hardware.

Key additions listed by the authors include:

- Added opening video using promotional material

- Support for 1-byte character encoding

- Support for DTE (data-time encoding)

- Support for tiled VWF (variable-width font)

- Support for colour highlighting

- Support for translucent shadows in combat mode

The Saturn release is notable within the Madou Monogatari lineage for shifting exploration to an isometric perspective rather than the series' traditional first-person dungeon-crawl view, and for being developed as a reimagining that began as a remake of earlier numbered entries.

The newly released patch makes this unique entry accessible to English-speaking audiences for the first time through a community-led localisation effort.

The fan translation is available now from the authors' release channels.

For collectors and retro RPG enthusiasts, the patch represents one of the more polished community translations of a late-90s Saturn RPG, and it preserves a piece of Compile and Sega’s shared history with Puyo Puyo’s origins.
