Better Super Mario Sunshine Online 2.0 arrived as a major update to the Dolphin-based multiplayer mod for Super Mario Sunshine, extending the community-built project originally released in July 2026.

The expansion, developed by Daytendo 64 of the Super Mario Elements modding community, targets Windows users running the Dolphin emulator and was first posted on GameBanana when the initial mod launched on July 27, 2026.

A follow-up update titled 2.0 was announced on October 24, 2026 during the community Sunshine Showcase event.

The 2.0 update expands the mod’s scope with official support for additional fan projects and new gameplay modes.

As shown in the release trailer on YouTube, Better Super Mario Sunshine Online 2.0 adds compatibility with mods such as Super Mario Eclipse, Super Mario Sunset, Super Mario Tropical Freeze, and Azack's SMS Randomiser.

New multiplayer modes announced in the trailer include Tag, Geoguessr, Manhunt, and Speedrun, alongside the existing online co-op story and hide-and-seek-style gameplay.

Paraphrasing the developer’s public remarks, Daytendo 64 explained he created this version out of frustration with the prior SMSO project’s slow update cadence and persistent connectivity and bug issues.

He cited multi-year gaps between releases and delays to promised versions as primary motivators for building an alternative that prioritizes regular updates and stability.

Technical and gameplay details published with the release are practical and specific.

The mod supports up to 10 players online, syncs all collectables (including shines and blue coins) and plaza state across connected players, and allows late-joining users to synchronize with the current session.

The hide-and-seek mode lets hosts select seekers or assign them at random, includes a timed grace period for hiders, and can randomly choose the next stage.

The mod also advertises 15 custom characters and adds multiple custom models—Peach, Daisy, Toad, Toadette, Toadsworth, E.

Gadd, Amy, Silver the Hedgehog, with additional characters for specific mods.

Players must provide a legal NTSC-U copy of Super Mario Sunshine to run the mod with Dolphin.

The developer and community recommend RadminVPN for online play, though port forwarding is noted as an alternative.

Full patch notes and the download are available on GameBanana, and the update’s trailer can be viewed on YouTube for a visual breakdown of new features.
