Songbird Productions and Eclipse Software are bringing back a revered classic with the upcoming Atari Jaguar port of Wings of Death, a vertically scrolling shooter first released on Atari ST and Commodore Amiga in 1990.
With the original programmer Marc Rosocha on board, Eclipse Software—the team behind the original Atari ST version—has developed this new Jaguar edition, combining retro authenticity with modern enhancements tailored for dedicated collectors and nostalgia-driven gamers.
Wings of Death follows the journey of a wizard transformed into an insect by a wicked witch, challenging players to navigate treacherous levels, unlock power-ups, and take on multiple transformations such as eagle, dragon, and griffin, on a quest to restore the protagonist’s true form.
Originally published by Thalion Software, the game gained a loyal following for its inventive gameplay and magical themes.
Pre-orders for the Atari Jaguar port are now available directly from Songbird Productions.
Two editions have been announced: a standard edition priced at $99.95, and a limited edition for $129.95, restricted to just 50 units.
Both packages include a boxed cartridge, a full-color manual, and a factory-pressed Remix CD soundtrack.
The limited edition offers additional exclusives, including a clear cartridge and the option for the buyer’s name to be featured in the printed manual—making it a must-have for dedicated collectors.
Songbird Productions provided an update noting that the port has reached its final testing phase, signaling significant progress.
In a recent statement, the publisher remarked, “We’re making strong headway and have now entered the final testing stage.
We’re also preparing the physical packaging, including the cover art layout and updated manual instructions.”
A standout feature of this release is its dual soundtrack offering.
Players will receive both a cartridge-based and a factory-pressed Remix CD soundtrack.
Those equipped with a Jaguar CD peripheral can upgrade their gameplay experience to enjoy high-fidelity, CD-quality audio—an exceptional addition for audiophile collectors.
Wings of Death for Atari Jaguar was showcased at JagFest2024, generating interest among retro gaming enthusiasts, with gameplay footage circulating online.
The new port is reportedly targeting a late 2025 release window, though Songbird Productions has yet to confirm a final launch date.
However, with pre-orders now live and final packaging underway, the wait for this resurrected shooter classic appears to be nearing its end.
Eclipse Software’s faithful approach, alongside Songbird Productions’ commitment to delivering an authentic retro experience, positions the Wings of Death Jaguar port as a standout inclusion in any retro collector or shoot ’em up fan’s library.
With 60FPS gameplay, enhanced color modes, and the involvement of Marc Rosocha, this project honors its storied legacy while embracing modern retro hardware enthusiasts.
