Plaion and Retro Games Ltd. have announced THE 800XL, a modern recreation of Atari’s best-selling 800XL 8-bit home computer first released in 1983.

Plaion, the company behind the upcoming Neo Geo AES+, is partnering with Retro Games Ltd. to produce the system as a faithfuI homage to the original hardware while adding contemporary features such as HDMI output and USB loading.

THE 800XL ships with a full-sized mechanical keyboard, a working cartridge slot and built-in Atari BASIC, allowing users to write, save and load their own programs.

The system supports software from the original Atari 400, 800, XL and XE 8-bit families and is also compatible with Atari 5200 titles.

Modern conveniences include USB loading, save states and a rewind function of up to 30 seconds, designed to make classic software more accessible to today’s players.
