Atari has confirmed it will sunset core services for the Atari VCS, scheduling the closure of the VCS digital store for February 1, 2027.

The company says it will publish an operating-system update that allows owners to migrate VCS functionality to local machines and will distribute an Atari Home Brew app so independent developers can continue supporting and sharing software outside Atari's infrastructure.

Background and timeline

The Atari VCS began life as the "Ataribox," teased at E3 2017 and formally revealed at the 2018 Game Developers Conference.

Marketed as a Linux-based "computer in a box" with a design nod to the Atari 2600, the platform was crowdfunded and raised roughly $3 million from 8,471 backers.

After multiple production delays, the console began shipping to backers in December 2020 and saw a retail release in Australia, New Zealand and North America in 2021.

Early critical reception was mixed, and retail sales did not meet expectations.

Company statements and support plans

On Wednesday, October 23, 2026, the Atari Club Discord posted an official statement from the VCS team announcing the store shutdown date and outlining the transition plan.

Atari said it will release an OS update to remove dependencies on Atari's online authentication and software delivery systems and will push the Atari Home Brew app to all VCS units to enable community-led content distribution.

The VCS team acknowledged the impact of the decision and said it intends to help owners through the transition.

In journalistic terms, the company conceded the move would be unwelcome but emphasized it will provide clear migration instructions early next year and work to ensure existing hardware remains usable.

Context from leadership

In a 2024 interview with Time Extension, Atari CEO Wade Rosen—who took over the project from previous management—said he likely would not have released the product under his stewardship, while also stressing Atari's commitment at the time to continue providing firmware updates and content for owners.

What this means for owners

Atari has also confirmed it ended direct console sales as noted on its website in the year following that interview.

With the store closure date set for February 1, 2027, Atari's OS migration and Home Brew distribution are intended to let the VCS community preserve access to games and applications locally.

The company plans to publish step-by-step migration guidance to give owners time to prepare.
