Wings of Death, the beloved vertically scrolling shoot 'em up originally developed by Eclipse Software for the Atari ST and Commodore Amiga in 1990, is set to make its return—this time on the Atari Jaguar.
Songbird Productions, renowned for championing retro gaming projects, has just announced a significant project milestone: the long-awaited Jaguar port has officially entered its final testing phase.
In an update shared via Songbird Productions’ official social media channels, the company detailed the progress made by its team and confirmed that development efforts are proceeding smoothly.
As stated in the announcement, Songbird Productions highlighted that the port is now in the “final testing” stage—representing the last key step before a release candidate is prepared.
In tandem with quality assurance checks, the publisher has commenced work on physical packaging materials, including new cover layouts and updated game manuals, previewed in images distributed online.
Songbird Productions also reaffirmed the inclusion of two distinct soundtracks for Wings of Death's Jaguar debut: the standard version embedded in the game cartridge and a specially produced Remix CD.
The latter is designed to offer CD-quality audio for players equipped with the Jaguar CD peripheral, enhancing the nostalgic experience with a modern audio upgrade.
The physical Remix CD will ship alongside the cartridge version, further appealing to dedicated collectors and retro hardware enthusiasts.
Although a firm release date for Wings of Death on the Atari Jaguar has not been confirmed, Songbird Productions previously indicated plans for a late 2025 launch.
Pre-order details are expected soon, with the final stages of production underway.
This strategic timeline aligns with the publisher’s commitment to delivering a polished, collector-ready product to the Atari community.
The newly developed port remains true to the original's challenging gameplay and magical narrative, which follows a wizard transformed into an insect by a vengeful witch.
Players journey through fantastical levels, gaining new forms such as eagle, dragon, and griffin, while seeking to regain their human identity.
Notably, the Jaguar version reunites the game with Marc Rosocha, its original programmer, ensuring an authentic adaptation.
Songbird Productions has confirmed that the Jaguar port will feature 60 frames per second performance, a high-color display mode, and both cartridge and CD soundtrack options—all elements demonstrated earlier this year at JagFest2024.
The news further establishes Songbird Productions and Eclipse Software’s reputation for quality retro revivals.
As anticipation builds in the classic gaming scene, fans can look forward to a faithful and enhanced iteration of a treasured title, positioned to take full advantage of the Atari Jaguar’s hardware capabilities.
