Atari has confirmed it acquired the rights to the original five Wizardry RPGs and the underlying intellectual property, opening the door for remasters, collections and re-releases across modern platforms.
The move brings back a foundational computer-RPG series that began in the early 1980s and helped shape role-playing design for decades.
The specific titles included in the acquisition are Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord (1981), Wizardry II: The Knight of Diamonds (1982), Wizardry III: Legacy of Llylgamyn (1983), Wizardry IV: The Return of Werdna (1987), and Wizardry V: Heart of the Maelstrom (1988).
Atari noted that a separate set of entries — Wizardry VI through VIII — are owned by Japanese developer Drecom and represent a different fictional continuity.
Atari said it plans to bring these early Wizardry games back to market through republishing, remastering, console ports and physical releases.
The company’s remaster studio Digital Eclipse — identified as an Atari-owned team known for restoration and remaster projects — has already worked on a full remake of Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord that overlays the original game with completely revamped visuals for the Nintendo Switch.
Atari CEO Wade Rosen described the acquisition as an opportunity to restore access to a landmark RPG series, saying the franchise has been out of circulation for more than two decades and that Atari intends to republish, remaster and produce console and physical editions of the early Wizardry titles.
For Nintendo Switch owners and retro-RPG fans, the acquisition signals potential new releases on Switch platforms and digital storefronts such as the Nintendo eShop, as well as boxed editions for collectors.
Digital Eclipse’s involvement suggests Atari is positioning the package toward both modernized remakes and curated retro collections.
This acquisition reunites core early Wizardry entries under Atari’s stewardship and sets a clear roadmap for preservation and commercial re-release.
We will monitor official announcements for platform windows, pricing, and release dates as Atari confirms specific remasters and Switch launch plans.
