Jusdan International has announced Tianji: Shadow of the Ancients, a turn-based role-playing game slated for release in 2027 on both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.

The developer positioned the title as a period RPG set during the Tang Dynasty that mixes tactical combat with exploration-focused level design.

According to the announcement, players assume the role of Shangguan Shuo, an amnesiac Tianji Guard soldier who begins his journey with only a fish token and a peculiar mask as clues to his identity.

As Shangguan Shuo delves into ancient subterranean ruins, he uncovers fragments of the past and becomes entangled in a wider scheme that culminates in the awakening of a millennium-old city.

The press material describes a narrative that unfolds across the Tianbao era and centers on rediscovered history and political unrest in Bashu.

Jusdan characterizes the combat as fast-paced and combo-driven while remaining grounded in classic RPG systems.

The developer says combat emphasizes combo chains and exploiting enemy weaknesses to render foes vulnerable and trigger follow-up "Pursuit Skills." Players can customize tactics through skill combinations, equipment choices, and so-called Core effects to create distinct playstyles.

Exploration is presented as a core pillar of the experience.

The studio highlights vertical traversal mechanics—climbing and swimming—alongside environmental puzzles.

Towns will feature a day/night cycle that changes events, item availability, and NPC interactions depending on the time of day.

Character progression includes companion-specific abilities that extend beyond combat.

Each companion reportedly brings unique utilities such as cooking, equipment refinement, Core upgrades, and rare-item trading; these support systems develop further as companions’ personal side stories progress.

Jusdan released an official trailer alongside the announcement.

At the time of publication, the company has confirmed the 2027 release window for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 but has not detailed specific release dates, pricing, or an eShop listing.

It also did not state whether the game will appear in an upcoming Nintendo Direct.

Tianji: Shadow of the Ancients joins a growing slate of period and narrative-driven RPGs targeting Nintendo hardware.

Readers can watch the official trailer from Jusdan International for a first look at combat, environments, and character designs.
